• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Leicester Photos needed

Hello fellow designer, I was hoping if any of you have some photos of some of the buildings at EGBG and maybe some dimensions.

All I need is a good image of one side of all 3 hangers, and the entrance of all 3 hangars.

Also possibly all 4 sides of the main control tower and some of the little buildings in the car park.

When this product is released, I will mention your names in the "special thanks" part or even "the team" part of the product, and also recieve this product for free.

I beg any of you to help me on this part, there is some I have fount on the internet but they are hard to work from and they are mainly just planes with a bit of building in the background or the front of the main building.

Thank you to anyone that helps me, really really appreciated.

Hey darren ..

This really is the bugbear of developing for FS isn't it?

I may be wrong, but if another member here has the pics ... chances are they're developing the airfield!

If you can get permission ... it may be worth a trip yourself to get the pics you want. They are almost always inadequate if a non-modeller takes them.

Good luck though ... I know exactly how you feel.

For an idea of externals and layout Google Streetview MAY be helpful. dimensions from Google earth Ruler or your sat imagery. Bing Birds eye view (not covered all areas) can be great for a bit more information too)

Jetphotos and airliners.net may be good too ... with one caveat .. the photos are copyright .. so can't be adapted as textures. The other frustrating problem is all those wretched planes in the middle of every shot!

Yes, it's horrible how they have the gall to park the silly aircraft so they block the views of the lovely buildings!

How rude! :rotfl:

I got in touch with the airfield, basically they can not help me at all. In exact words they said "Darren, I do not have time or the equipment to get measurments and photos of our structures. We are also unable to give you permission to get these yourself, google earth is a good source for measurement as the CAA use it to measure our runways!".

Guess they didn't understand that the only dimension I am looking for, for all buildings is the HEIGHT.

I have honestly possibly seen all photos of EGBG, but 99% of them have (like you say) an aircraft right in the center of the photo.

Brilliant, out of everything I am stuck on Height and photos.

It sounds primitive Darren, but often the only way I can get height is from proportion

(Width with length) x proportion = height!

Inexact I know, but you have to work with what's available.

and yeah, Photos are about the first thing I want to secure before agreeing to a project.

I'm guessing you have these as a reference:

You might be able to contact the guy who posted these and ask nicely if he/she has any more.

What do you mean by proportion? can you give me an example of how you would get the height of a building that is 10.5 meters wide and 14.5 meters long?

As for the photos needed for textures, I will have to work by the photos I have seen and re-create the proper texture in PS.

Thanks

Yes, I honestly think I have seen every photo out there, came to a point where I was searching for WW2 photos when it was an RAF base!

For now, I am just going of my estimating skills, my estimating seems pretty accurate, so on that picture, I would say it is around 7-8 meters tall. But I would like a bit of mathematics to get me a better estimate rather than my own eyes.

So, you speak of proportion..explanation?

Regards

You know the footprint, so make the shape to match the photos

Adjust the proportions so that it matches.

Here is a very ugly rough example ....

That does actually look very very good hcornea!
just the entrance is in the center of the building and it is flat.

But looks excellent! thanks

Not much info on "how"

That is a very quick template scaled to match the core footprint .. Which looks like 11.5 x 11.5 with some sort of annex off the side 4m.

Usually I would cut this out as a geotiff which has the advantage of being squared and georeferenced.

The add-on bits are matched to the footprint, which can also be used as a template for your roof texture.

The height bit is just by "reckoning". But if it pleases your eye and is feasible (eg the planes tail will fit through the hanger door). It will be ok.

The single biggest problem is that where you need the detailed images is airside and that's usually where we have the least imagery!

Otherwise contact the flying club there. They should be able to give you access.

Yeah I booked and took the "family affair fly away" and had 2 members of my family take as many photos they can of the buildings - this was the only way I could get the photos from airside.
