• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

.mdl file

Hi,

A friend gave me an .mdl file for an aircraft he said I could use in my quest to design my own aircraft. I'm pretty sure it's a Gmax file but I am wondering if I purchase gmax...will I be able to simply load this file up and begin making changes to the aircraft?

If anyone uses gmax I'd appreciate the help. Thanks.

1) It is not a GMax file. It is the result of exporting an aircraft to the format FS use. The source can be GMax, but it can also be something else.
2) GMax is not something you buy. It is free. The exporter to create MDL files fomr GMax is free for FS2004. For FSX, it is included in the Deluxe version of FS.
3) You can't load the MDL file to create an aircraft. If you know where it comes from, you can ask the developer if you can have the source file. I would expect him to say no, but you can always try. Even if you could use the MDL file you would need permission before modifying it.

Some developers do make their source files available. Among others there is a Merlin CH101 helicopter by Lasse Lindh, available on Hovercontrol http://64.34.169.161/cgi-bin/ifolio/imageFolio.cgi?direct=File--Downloads/Open_Source_Design&img=9

Ole Egholm has made available three files with gmax sources of static aircraft (rather simple models). Do a search on www.flightsim.com, the first is named "gmxstat1.zip". There are also some Tampa static aircrafts. And rather many non-aircraft source files.
