• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Mission creation by the numbers

Hello out there.

I am hoping that some talented mission creator will take pity on this almost 70 year old man and will help me by giving me the individual steps, one by one, in using the OPT to create a mission.

I have read everything that I can find....watched all of the tutorial vids....made the necessary changes to files (I think) and still cannot get a mission to even show up. It seems that everything that I have read changes with whoever the author of the article is and it has left my poor old brain a quivering mass of protoplasm because I am not a code monkey and do not pretend to be.

I uninstalled SDK yesterday and reinstalled it according to the sticky as well. I have the OPT dropping down from the Tools menu, so that is not an issue and have built missions that include the 6 required files but nothing will show up in the Missions menu of FSX.

I don't know if I am saving off at the right times or if I am starting and stopping FSX at the right times or if I am editing the correct files at the correct time or using the correct category files....I just don't know, which is why I am asking for the steps...1...2...3...4...etc to be posted.

I realize that some will think this is the request of a total noob who knows nothing at all about doing anything in the FSX program, other than flying and that I have no business doing anything other than flying the existing missions and I am OK with that.

If anyone out there is inclined to assist me with my request, please, make it as simple and clear as possible and presume that I know absolutely nothing at all about anything and be prepared to hear back from me as I try to assimilate and digest the informational steps provided.

Many thanks in advance,

ericthecat
or if you prefer, Richard.

Hi Richard and Welcome from another almost septuagenarian!!

First off, the OPT is possibly not the easiest way to make missions for FSX, but it has the benefit of being the most comprehensive and specific. Many of us use alternatives like:

InstantMissionMaker (Flight1 payware - see http://www.flight1.com/products.asp?product=instmiss) or

FSX Mission Editor (Jim Keir's website freeware (limited functions) - see http://www.fsmissioneditor.com/FSX/index.php)

However, there's a good introduction to using the OPT for mission building here:

But maybe you've seen that already?

Personally, I use the FSX Mission Editor as I find it does everything I need. However, the OPT comes in handy when you want visual confirmation of things like area trigger extents, so forth.

Anyway, Good Luck and do post any further questions.

Cheers - Dai.

Hello, Dai,
Thanks for your response, it is highly appreciated.

It seems that the issue that I am having, at the moment, is the inability to save the edited .FLT file, which appears to be the final step in getting the mission to show up in fsx. I keep getting the "Check to see if this file is opened elsewhere" message. All other windows/programs are closed but I still get that message. Would it work if I changed the name of the FLT file....saved that name changed file and then changed it back to what it should be?

Trying my damnedest to make this work.

Richard - try opening the editor (Notepad++ ?) as administrator. This might help.

Alternatively, use a different text editor like Geany?

Bests - Dai.

David....I gave the Administrator idea a try last evening and that brought up an update to Notepad++ and that allowed me to finally get a mission posted in FSX. I also uninstalled FDX and SDK and did a fresh install on both before I tried the Admin idea and that gave me 3 programs under the Tools dropdown. I allowed fsx and sdk to install in their default locations and I think that helped a lot. Now, onto programming the flight its self. Thanks for the encouragement and assistance and I will keep you updated on my progress. Us older guys can get it done but it just takes us a bit longer....LOL.
