• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Mysterious collective inputs

I'm making a helicopter, using piston engine based flight dynamics - using the R-22 as a starting point. When I first start up a flight, the power oscillates up & down slowly, while the chopper is just sittting there on the runway and no hands are on the controls. You can actually see the animated collective slowly moving up and down as the power changes. At first I thought my joystick was giving an erroneous input, but in the Windows callibratiion dialogue all seems normal. I also noticed that the R-22 has a similar problem - though not as bad. The turbine based Jet Ranger doesn't have the problem. Should I get an excorcist?

The things I can think of are that FS has always had issues with input "noise" when more than one controller is mapped to the same axis. This behavior is reinforced by the automatic mapping of any new detected controller to FS defaults without asking first. I've also found the flutter to happen with digital inputs that in principle do not vary the signal unlike the old analog pots did. A third cause may simply be that the sensitivity and range settings on the input joystick is set incorrectly in FS. In FS9 as with FSX, all my axes defaulted to a 20% dead band and 50% sensitivity, in effect using 30% of total joystick movement for 100% axis movement.

One quick way to determine if this is indeed causing your problem is to disable joystick input (ctrl-J used to be the hotkey - can't remember now), and see if the issue stops. If it does, it's a mapping issue most likely.

Hope this helps,

Etienne

If I unplug the joystick/throttle (which is an X-45), the power continues to fluctuate - including the collective lever movement. So it seems like an FSX problem, rather than a controller input problem.

That is very strange indeed, but, this is a strange software sometimes :)

With the X45 disconnected, do you still observe the behavior when moving the throttle (collective) using the keyboard?

Do you observe the behavior with the Saitek drivers disabled (in particular, magic mouse)?

Does the behavior show in different aircraft models (not just helicopters)?

Sorry this may not be of such help - this is a tough one !

I can't reproduce the bug in the Cessna, but you can definitely see it happening in the R-22. If I disconnect the Saitek and use the Page Up & Page Down arrows when in the R-22, there's no improvement - I can still reproduce it. Haven't tried disablin Magic Mouse; my goofy Saitek utility refuses to launch. I think I'm going to mosey over to Hovercontrol and see if anyone else has this problem. One guy I spoke with said he gets it, which leads me to think it's another "feature" of FSX.
