• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Need expert help converting models

I have a couple of 3d models (various formats) of navy ships that I need to get imported into FSX.

So far I am managing with most of them, but having trouble with 2-3 of ships also. To be more specific, I have them open in GMAX and in BLENDER but I don't know enough to correctly apply the textures.

PM me and let me know what you think is fair in terms of compensation.

Regards,

Mark

Open in Blender and GMAX, but you don't made the ships with them, right? With Sketchup?
If yes, I would export them, then open with ModelconverterX.
Export again to 3DS Files.
Open GMAX and import the 3DS File. Now you can't see the textures, right?
Go to the material navigator in GMAX (Toolbar colored balls on it) and you can see a tree with the materials. This are materials below every material there is the texture. Double Click it and then you can choose again the texture file. I use png files. Now the texture is like in Sketchup placed on the ship.
But you can not see it, you must double click on the material above the texture. Then a window is shown with a white/blue ball. Click on this, the texture is shown at the model. To add a night texture you can do this simply by the "Maps" in this window. There is "Selfilumination", here you can open your night texture. Thats all.
If the textures mapped already, they should be at the same place in GMAX after importing the object.

Guys I was having problems getting the textures to show up in MCX. I finally managed, early in the wee hours this morning, to get one of them converted and it looks good in the sim.

The other, I fear, is just to large of a beast, in terms of polygons, faces, places and what-have-you, to get done with MCX. So I might be needing to rewrite the scope of work here a bit for that one. More on it later.

It should be noted that are .max models that I purchased -- I'm no modeller (a basic house here and there, in sketchup, I can manage but that's about it).

what do you want with that model in sim? scenery object or flyable aircraft?

RK is helping me with it -- the plan is to use it as AI ship traffic. Probably the model is just too big with too many details.
