• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Need help activate cross runways

I read manual instruction how to activate cross runways. I add Xwind. I test run FSX, all planes going one runway. Something wrong and I need help to activate all cross runways. All runways set to open to land and takeoff.

Hi

It might help if you mention which airport this is for. Using the xwind technique has varied results at airports that is affected by a number of factors such as the level of traffic, runway lengths and more.

You may be seeing what you should expect to see. You may not. If we know which airport it is, we can probably help more.

Hi

As you say, the xwind technique should work fine at KORD and, if it is not working in the file you are using, then it cannot be set up properly.

Let me understand: you have added 3 runways to which version of KORD ? Or do you mean to the default airport ? I'm just thinking that all versions of KORD I have seen have the xwind runway technique working and multiple runways in use.

It would also be helpful to know which airport editor you are using. Of course, Airport Design Editor (ADEX) is the simplest to use in setting up xwind runways.

Of course, achieiving this effectively - especially at KORD - does also require an understanding of how FS prioritisies runway use based on the various factors that come into play.

Which manual are you referring to ? Obviously, the one to read and follow closely is Jim Vile's, the current version of which includes the instructions for his Advanced Technique. This can be downloaded from several places, including Alpha India Group Forums.

There really is not a substitute for reading Jim's tutorial carefully, following the examples given and learning the techniques that way.

I started from scratch - stock KORD, there is new plan to add four runways and shutdown two old runways. I prefer to use three as for right now. 9R/27L; 9C/27C-new; 9L/27R-new; 10C/28C-new; 10L/28R; 4L/22R; 4R/22L; 14L/32R-soon closed; 14R/32L-soon closed. I sue ADE 9X current version

Aside from reading Jim's tutorials, the only advice I can give you is to set your KORD project aside until you have mastered the xwind runway technique.

KORD is a very large project on which to try to learn how to make xwind runways work and you would do much better mastering this on a much simpler airport first.

As mentioned above, you also need a complete grasp of how FS allocates runways to arriving and departing aircraft to achieve a realistic/workable runway usage at KORD. There are many posts about this in this forum - read them all very carefully.

Also keep in mind that all the changes you are making with the runways mean a lot of work is needed on approach code, which also has a significant bearing on how the runways are used. You will need to write these approaches with care - preferably using Jeppesen charts for the approach plates.

My point here is that getting the xwind runways set up correctly at this airport is just one of many factors that will lead to a workable use of runways at such a busy airport. Developing an original version of an airport on this scale is 400 - 500 hours of hard work for an experienced developer who understands all of these factors.

It sounds like you are trying to run before you can walk and that's never a good idea. Start small and work up to learn the techniques thoroughly, so that you can apply them to larger airports. ;)
