• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Newbie asks newbie question

G'day to all,

First off, thanks much for FSXPlanner, it's so nice that people are still willing to share their knowledge.
What I would like to do is build simple airfields and very small airports where there are none for my bush flying. My problem is that I don't know where or how to find the correct elevation data for my proposed strips. I have tried Google Earth, but those data don't work, the runways float, mostly. The other problem is the trees and such that poke through the runway, apron, etc. surfaces. I don't know the first thing about scenary design, so perhaps I have bit off more than I can chew. Could you help me? All and any help greatly appreciated.

The best way to find the elevation for your proposed airstrip would be to fly to the desired location and land. You can then see what the elevation is at that spot and use that. Note that the airport has to be one elevation everywhere, so if the place you want to create the airport is on a hill, or is bumpy, you might get odd results. Therefore make sure you have enough flat space for the airport.
 
Be careful using the altitude based on the aircraft altimeter. This will include the distance from the aircraft center to the ground.

Something like TCalcX can be used to get the ground altitude accurately at any point in the FSX world

I think you will need to flatten the area using a tool such as SBuilderX or FSXKML
