• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

night textures

I abandoned the SODE route, won't work in SFX. I tried reverting back to an FS2004 MDL, but I don't see anything that would control when or how an object shows, so that's not the answer either. Thanks for all the sugestions, but I think I will have to abandon the day/night thing, not possible in SFX. Oh well, back to the ole drawing board I guess. Maybe I could do something really fancy and tricky to achieve the same effect, don't know, trial and error I guess. Again thanks for the attempt to help, but with FSX, this is one impossible task to do. Again sorry about the old thread being opened.

For FS 2004 MDL files, you use MDL Tweaker, available here at FS developer.

Thanks ,but I have one problem...I don't have MakeMDL as I am using FSX and the SDK don't come with MakeMDL. the tweaker won't load FSX models and I can't convert them to FS2004 models without the MakeMDL file. So where can I possibly get that? And is it going to run without having FS2004 installed? Kinda got a road block here.

Ok, I found a copy of the MakeMDL.exe and supporting files, but now the tweaker gives me an error "cannot find the file mwgfxvb.dll" what now?

Is there a different version, maybe an older one for this module? As I have found with many updated mods in the past, the updates never include all the required files to run it.

I got it to run, but exactly how would I make an object show only at night using this? What would I change in the textures to make them night only? The manual doesn't tell me much.

OK, I tried all of the possible settings for textures in the tweaker, all I can get is the model not even showing in the sim at all. I don't think converting an FS2004 model to an FSX Model is possible. As before, back to square 1. I just don't think this effect is at all possible with FSX. It just don't have the capability to do it because of the way textures are displayed in FSX. FSX only uses the Diffuse (day) texture for both day and night and there is no way around it that I can find. You can't eliminate the diffuse texture, because that is the main texture, without it, the model won't show either day or night. I think it is just a complete impossibility to have an object show only at night or even only in day. It cannot be done with FSX. FS2004 may do it, but not FSX.I guess the writers of the sim didn't think anyone would want to do such a thing so they eliminated the ability. But, there is always the "one" person who would want to do something that can't be done. I'm that "one" person, oh well I'll just accept the defeat and move on. thanks for the suggestions, but they were to no avail. Nice try though.

I actually found a way to do it. Seems to work ok with no ill affects. I took the 'diffuse' (day) texture and turned it into a 'blank' black texture with a black alpha. I replaced the actual diffuse texture with that blank texture. then I changed the 'destination blend' to "invsrccolor" and the 'source blend' to "srccolor", then I changed the 'set default to transparent' to 'set default opaque' saved the model and placed it using ADE. The object now only shows at night. It took some trial and error playing around with the textures and the settings, but I got it to work. As for showing day only, that cannot be done since it uses the diffuse texture for both day and night. But, I can live with what I got.
