• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Octagon Mapping

Hey guys, I've a problem while mapping an octagon shape tower. I've using the cylinder option and box option but when I unwrap it,the shapes become too complicated. Can anybody gives me tips and solution to my problem. Here is the shape of the tower.

I would probably do something like this:

Where in polygon mode I've selected the 3 polys that make up one vertical segment and detached them from the rest of the object as a clone, then I selected the horizontal polys and did Edit > Select invert > Delete, leaving everything except the vertical segments to be mapped in a separate operation (probably using "box"). Then on the cloned segment I put a planar map and rotated it with the gizmo 22.5° on the Z axis and 90° on the X axis so it basically lines up with the face of the segment. I'd then put a UVW Unwrap on it and map it to a the texture. Once that's mapped I'd probably use the array function to duplicate it 7 times and rotate each duplicate 45° filling in all the missing segments but now with the mapping complete.

When I've used Cylinder mapping I've avoided UVW Unwrap and adjusted the mapping using the Gizmo of the UVW Map. You cannot be as accurate, but towers rarely need anything complicated.

I don't really think they need all segments mapped to a unique part of the texture sheet to be honest, I guess it would depend on the tower but one segment pretty much looks just like the other in most cases I would think. I can never leave something like this alone BTW, lol:

Now I just need to finish the texture and find a place to use it :)

One more question guys, when do we use flightsimx material? For my scenery I use the standard option.
