It seems to me that there aren't any aircraft developers who don't have to go hacking the .air files to get the best results and yet the air file format appears completely undocumented (publicly at least) and as such there are inherent risks in modifying them for 3rd party aircraft in case the format changes. (Not to mention that attempts to decode the file format and tools which can edit them presumably break the EULA having had to reverse engineer the format.)
I appreciate that there are licencing and proprietary information issues in the files themselves, but could future FS releases not use an open format for creation and a compiler, along the lines of the bgl system?
