• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

placed objects don't always show.

I have created some static boats in 3DS Max, placed sucessfully in the scenery concerned and they are clearly visible in the sim.

But, I need several copies of these boats along the same river so used the Object Placement tool. after compiling the placement file the boats sometimes don't appear. However, I can still select the boats using OPT and suddenly - there they are, fully visible. Close the OPT and blink- it's gone: one empty river.

Any suggestions, would this be solved by building an object (boat) into a library?

The object placement tool only loads the XML definition of the scenery. It will show that scenery in FS only while the tool is open.

In order to show the scenery in flightsim, youll need to compile the xml (save xml scenery button in the OPT) and place the resultant bgl file in a scenery folder of an activated scenery (i.e. addon scenery/scenery is a useful place for testing scenery files)

That's esactly what I did do.
The XMl has been compiled, the resulting bgl file is of a reasonable size, ie not empty; the GUID is listed correctly in the xml as are the scenery density parameters for each instance.

Are you positivelly sure you have ALL of the boat textures in their respective folder?

I think I had this problem. Arno found the solution for me, here is what he said:

"Did you place your custom scenery objects in a library BGL file? If not (for example if the BGL file also contains the default placement at Seattle), the object will be geo-locked and they can not be used elsewhere in the world. They need to be put in a library BGL without any placement in the same file."

The Boat model only has one LOD.
The DDS texture file is one 512px square tile placed in the Addon Scenery/texture folder.

Surely the boat model would NEVER show up in the sim if there was a problem with textures.

(I have tried a number of times in the past to make object BGL librarys, but only ever get a load of cryptic error messages, the explanation of which remain obscure.)
...actually, I am just trying out the newest version of Library creator, not getting error messages now.

I started by placing a single instance of the boat from 3DS Max's exporter (Ace's Tools- LOD export), then used OPT to place further instances on the assumption that FSX is treating the bgl as some kind of library. That assumption was made because the boat becomes listed in the OPT by its GUID number.

Making a Library BGL is extreamly easy and you have to do it for things to work correctly. Just make somthing like the following code using the MDL models you want in the library. Run the code threw BGLComp and Place your new Library BGL in the scenery folder and your models will all show up in the Object Placment Tool. You should have no further problem with placing and displaying your objects!

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<FSData version="9.0" xmlns:xsi='http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance' xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="bglcomp.xsd">
<ModelData sourceFile="road.MDL" />
<ModelData sourceFile="roadMed.MDL" />
<ModelData sourceFile="PalmTree.MDL" />
<ModelData sourceFile="BluCar.MDL" />
<ModelData sourceFile="houseFirst.MDL" />
</FSData>

Thanks very much, it does indeed work now. Also- I like the idea of some objects remaining Geolocked though, that is if they are unique.

I'm going to re-build some previous projects into librarys to use the benefits properly now.
