• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA Plane Transparency Issues

Hi folks,

I think the time has come to stop playing and failing and start asking. I'm having problems with the visibility of planar objects when viewed through transparencies in other planar objects.

Basically, what I have done it this:

To create the windscreen and canopy for a vehicle scenery object in Gmax, I have created four planes - one for the windscreen, one for the left side windows, one for the left side of the canopy and one for the canopy roof - and textured them. I have then cloned the left side windows and canopy and moved them to the right. I realise, before I go any further, that this means the Normals are incorrect for these polys. The windscreen is also inside-out as it happens.

The textures are double sided, the same material is applied to all of these polys. I have applied the Mesh Editing roll-out's "Normal", "Flip Normals" modifier to the windscreen and the two right hand side components.

The problem is that "Flip Normals" seems to do absolutely nothing. If I view the model in the sim, or in ModelConverterX, then look through the windscreen, all the planar objects are invisible. If I look through the left windows, they're spot on. If I look through the right windows, all are invisible... except the windscreen and, unfathomably, the canopy roof!

So. OK. Remove all "Flip Normal" modifiers, clone all the objects and Flip Normals on the clones. The problem moves from one side of the vehicle to the other - all is now visible through the right windows, all but the canopy roof and the windscreen are invisible through the left windows. Everything is still invisible through the windscreen.

That's the only place I can find an option for Flip Normals. All the objects and textures work fine, unless they are viewed through a transparency. I've tried lots of combinations of the above on individual polys and groups of polys - apart from moving the problem from one side to the other, I'm getting nowhere. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Ian P.

If the "left window" is displaying correctly...

...Clone a copy (not an instance!)...

...Select the copy then add a "Mirror" modifier to the object's stack (note: NOT the "Mirror" button on the top toolbar!)...

...With the object still selected, right-click on the "Move" tool to open the x,y,z coordinate dialog. Change the sign of the x coordinate (i.e., remove the minus sign!)...

You should now have a right window that will display correctly in the sim.

Hi Bill,

that apparently made no different whatsoever.

I think I've reached a point now where I've decided that this one is more hassle than it is worth and I'm giving up on it until further notice. I'll probably come back and remodel the upper components (windows, roof and windscreen) using a block as a starting point, rather than trying to do it using planes.

Thanks.

Ian, if you wish, send me the file directly and I'll fix it for you. I can assure you that I have absolutely zero interest in an ack/ack gun!
