• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Problems with attaching objects/effects

Hi,

I can´t attach objects/effects within gmax by using the Attachtool. Even if i follow the instructions from the SDK word by word, the effect does not show up in fltsim. I looked at the xml file which is generated by gmax when exporting a scenery model. Shouldn´t there be the code which adds the effect to the model ? ( <AttachedObject attachpointName .... )
Or is that code in the mdl-file. If yes, it may be a problem of SGX which I use to place my models.

The code is inside the MDL object, so you don't see it in the XML code.

Do you maybe have an exclude active in the area? Excludes often give trouble with attached objects. If you are using one, try to remove it to see if that solves your trouble.

I have of course an exclude. I had to remove the standard FS2004 airport which i try to make. But i will try without an exclude.

It is indeed the exclude area which causes effects/attached objects not to appear. So Gmax gets more and more nonsense for me. Most things I like to do can´t be done by gmax models or only with very high knowledge. Guess I hav to go back and use FSDS2 :(

I don´t want to call it a bug, either. But the problem is the new mdl format which you create with gmax. Gmax was not designed for MSFS. It´s just a 3D modelling programme which has the function added to create mdl files. FSDS on the other hand is specifically designed for MSFS. I have many possibilities to edit my models according to my needs without knowledge of bglc or something else.

If FSDS serves your needs, why are you trying to learn GMAX?

If FSDS leaves some needs unmet (perhaps why you are trying GMAX), then why are you so bummed to find that GMAX will also leave some needs unmet?

That is not true. If FSDS would ever be updated to the new scenery format, it would have the same problems with the attached objects.

The gamepack, MakeMDL, which creates the scenery files for you is specially designed for FS, so that GMax is a more general tool says nothing. It is the quality of the gamepack that counts (which can still be improved of course).

But the exclude bug you encountered here has nothing to do with GMax, it is just something strange in the new scenery format MS is using. Will probably be ironed out in future FS versions.

I try to use gmax because,a s arno said, FSDS is not being updated (at least not for the time being). But if it was, i hope it would be easier to build sceneries because it would be a tool only designed for the needs of FS.
I know now that gmax is not the reason for the disappearing effects (sorry if i "hurt" someone). But hopefully MS will work on the new format. I´m learning day by day new things through this forum and do really appreciate it.
