• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Problems with resample.exe and ShpVec2.exe

Both fail to open. They flash and disappear, like aborted pop-ups. I get a glimpse of the DOS-like screen, sometimes I see characters and poof, nothing. It is not a problem with .exe extension. All others work. I've turned off the pop-up blocker and changed security settings. Nothing works. ConfigSDK.exe and TmfViewer.exe open fine, as do all other executables on my computer. If it is something in the registry I have no clue. I gather that it is uncommon as no one else has posted the problem (that I've been able to find). I'm very excited at the possibilities of design, but can't get past this 1st square. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Both of these utilities are command-line driven and have no GUI. Running from within Windows will just show a flashing DOS window, that will quickly close.

Any work done with Resample is done prior to running the utility. Prepping photo scenery files, mesh source, that's all done outside of the interaction with Resample. Only when the files are ready to be compiled would you bring Resample or Shp2Vec into the final file creation.

With respects to working with Shp2Vec, there are a couple of front-end utilities that will allow you to do the prep work and then call the compiler to finalize the BGL files. These utilities are SBuilderX and FSX KML. SBX will also do some photo work utilizing Resample. If you're working within an airport area, Airport Design Editor will do work that can be compiled with Resample.

Thanks for the succinct education. I tried ShpVector2.exe when reading the Terrain and Scenery.html in the service pack and nowhere did I get a clue that what you point out was the case, hence my confusion. What you say makes perfect sense. I briefly considered such an angle, but figured surely such a prerequisite would have shown up in the instructions I was following. I have lots of time and will study to show myself approved at this new hobby. I'll also try not to stay embarrassed for long. I hope my future questions will be less nieve. Thanks for the kick forward!

The Shp2Vec Tool

The Shp2Vec (shape file to vector data) tool is in the SDK\Environment Kit\Terrain SDK folder. This tool takes vector shape data and creates the BGL files used by Flight Simulator. The vector shape data is in standard ESRI shape file format. This format includes three file types, .shp (shape data), shx (shape index data), and .dbf (database file containing attributes of the shape data). The ESRI shapefile is a public domain format for the interchange of GIS (geographical information system) data. The wide availability of tools which support the shapefile format and the fact that the format is publicly documented made it the logical choice as the input to the Shp2Vec tool.



The Shp2Vec tool is command line driven, and takes the following parameters:
