• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Programming question

Hi all - I have some questions regarding effects.

There is an aircraft (F/A-18) that has as part of it's [smokesystem] the ability to start an fx_napalm (and others). How does FS know where to put this effect on the ground? I see in the fx_napalm file where there are positional info as well as in the aircraft.cfg file. Does FS9 somehow calculate internally where the bomb hits land (or an object)?

Is it possible to figure out what, if any, trajectory it follows - or to program it?

What I've got going is a sim that calculates the parabolic curve of a dropped object (aka bomb, water bomb, whatever), but due to the intrinsic nature of FS (so I've been told elsewhere) I cannot know when it hits "ground". But the folks I fly with have this effect and when they drop a bomb it starts a "fire". I would like to make use of the effect if possible, but I haven't the foggiest idea of how to get the info to/or from FS9. I am communicating with FS9 via the FSUIPC of Pete Dowson, so I know I can trigger the smoke effect, but how to calculate either the trajectory or to get the impact point of the FS9 "bomb" is beyond me.

I'd appreciate any overall view - or just say I'm crazy and it can't be done. I can live with that too. And thanks!

Well, Guess I'll answer this one myself. The "bomb" actually hits precisely over where they were when they released it. There's a time delay - but the "bomb" drops straight down - in other words it only knows the altitude of the aircraft above ground.

So there's no joy in Mudville after all.
