• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 Railroad

Allo,

Here are two photos of railway tracks in the sim.

The photo map.jpg was taken in an area with good aerial imagery. We only see a pale band, without other details.

The photo generic.jpg was taken in a generic area, where aerial imagery is absent. The railway track is however much more precise (we can see the sleepers!).

I would like to use this more precise railroad texture across our entire rail network. Anyone know how to do it?

Thanks.

THANKS.

I'll bet that the bottom one is procedurally generated from OSM data. I don't know if it can be forced to appear on top of an ortho though. SDK seems to be silent about how to create countryside scenery.

The railroad texture is definitely somewhere in the bowels of the sim since we can see it! All we would need to do is add the "road without outside airport" option in the editor, texture it and we could create paths and railway tracks as desired.

It seems more practical to follow the "path" of power lines or windmills imo.

If you want to see that railroad texture, disable the Bing data, you will have it

Joking of course

It is possible to have them with aerial too by creating a dedicated scenery, it is just a bunch of textured polygons
However, you should consider that the data available to create that type of scenery is somewhat "coarse"
Mixing coarse data with aerial imagery is not something everyone likes (in Xplane several people disable the roads and rails overlays when using the Ortho4Xp)

Yes, what mamu said. You want tracks for your railroads and I get that there are track like textures buried down, but they aren't even that great imo and you would have to set up your routes anyways, correct? There is no "rail system" map like there is of roads, likely due to GPS apps. It seems like vector lines of tracks would be pretty straightforward however.

It would be so simple for Asobo to add a function allowing you to create a simple path, with trees cleared on both sides, and to add the texture of your choice (road, railway, canal, etc.).

Have you looked outside lately? It's 2024. MSFS 2020 is already legacy my friend.

We? there are still people developing for FS9. I am suggesting that Asobo has their sights set on this years product. They are still releasing updates, replying support requests, but as to creating an entirely new scenery tool for 2020 and not just calling it a 2024 enhancement, seems commercially impractical to me.
