• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Resample.exe doesnt work on terrain Geotiffs from Arc9.2

Im not sure if this thread is still relevant with the release of the final SDK service pack, however:

ESRI changed 'something' in the Data> Export Data function between ArcMap ver 9.1 and 9.2.

In Arc 9.1 it was possible to export a Geotiff of an ESRI Grid ('mesh' in FS speak) and resample it into a mesh Bgl. This was done by right clicking on the layer in Arc and selecting Data> Export Data, then filling out the required information (cell size, output format etc) to create greyscale geotiff.

In 9.2, exporting the data in the same way and trying to use resample gives the error (Paraphrased) "Cannot resample. Does not support tiled images"

Now I realise it must be difficult for MS to keep track of changes of formats created by other companies etc but does anyone from Aces/MS have any idea what this error means or suggest a work around?

At this stage I can no longer create high resolution terrain mesh from GIS data which will obviously have implications if the company I am now working for takes up using ESP (which presumably uses the same resample.exe?)

This is a good suggestion for the resample tool, allow it to read more "types" of GeoTIFF files. With aerial images I have also had problems when I saved them with FWTools for example because that they of GeoTIFF was not supported. There I luckily could specify which GeoTIFF type to write. But it would be nice if resample could read all.

At ArcGIS 9.2 it seems ESRI changed the default layout of TIFFs created using ArcGIS to be Tiled instead of Striped. We have not yet updated Resample.exe to accommodate the new file layout.

Here is a workaround that might be of use in the meantime:

At ArcGIS 9.2 there is a configuration setting located in

c:\Program Files\Common Files\ESRI\Raster\defaults\tiff.pdf

Open this file in a text editor (it is NOT an Acrobat PDF) and change the setting

create_tiled_images("Create Tiled Images"): "true"

to be

create_tiled_images("Create Tiled Images"): "false"

and newly created TIFF images should be in the Striped layout that is compatible with Resample.exe.
