• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 Runway textures

I wish to create an FS9 scenery for a rather decrepit airfield (KVK; ULMK) at Kirovsk, Russia, close to the Norwegian border. This is not in the default FS9 scenery.

The runway here is concrete with many cracks and with tufts of grass poking through. The default FS textures used in ADE are much too polished looking. AFCAD textures are similar.

I wonder if REX will modify an addon airport runway created by ADE? Failing that, I'll have to create my own texture.

I'f be grateful for any suggestions on how best to proceed. I can use Photoshop but I don't know how to add a custom runway texture to ADE, or even if that is possible.

Hi,

I am afraid you will have to create your own textures. And that is not easy (to say the least).
But there are a lot of helpful threads on this forum that can point you to the ways of doing it. Use the 'search' option.

Thanks. :)

As Gen 'Vinegar' Joe Stilwell and others put it, 'nil carborundum illegitimi'. That advice has served me well for close on 70 years.

John- I don't know if this is the best way, but I did get fair results doing this:

In google Earth I took a screenshot (can use save image if you want in Google itself) of the rwy in question as close but clear as possible.

I also took a measurement of the rwy length in case I needed it.

I did! :)

In FSDS (Gmax might be better because it can deal with ground polys better), but FSDS did fairly well.

I made my rwy length and width, but made it in 100 foot length sections. I then used my photo of the runway for my texture and covered each section with a portion of the rwy. i played with how much of rwy each section got and fussed with each length just a bit.

I finally got my rwy with cracks and stuff. I am sure there is a much better way, but this did work for me.

Here's a screenshot of it. Bob

Thanks, Bob.

Your screenshot looks pretty good, I must say. I might give that method a try. I had my airport all constructed - accurate measurements of runway width, length, taxiways and ramps. When I came to adding a runway texture the end result with the default or even REX textures was so awful that I deleted the whole thing!

I'd more or less given up so thanks for your suggestion.

John- don't go deleting your stuff! That is sacreligous! ha hahahaha!

What do you design for.... FSX? I do. I see Xplane and prepar3D but I am tired of buying new simulators! Anyway I use FSDS, AFX, and Instant Scenery2. I also use ADE. Each tool has it's ups and downs. I've been around since the Rwy12 days! Hooked ever since.

Should keep in touch... pick each other's brains for ideas. I'm an old retired teacher. Live in Ione, WA. In the last couple of years I've been working with a fellow in Seattle on RAF, NAS, and AFB bases, circa 50'-70's or so. i.e. modifying them back to that era. That means a lot of fiddling with our photoreal to get rid of stuff we found wasn't there 'back in the day'.

Been trying my hand at making static planes. Worst ability on my part was doing the textures. Learned much lately have come along way but far from perfect. I don't think they would pass inspection, but they're ok for placing a few around the area just for fun.

Will send e-mail address by PM in case you're interested in keeping in touch. You can use that to find me on Skype. Bob
