• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSXA SBuilderX and File Size

Before I get any further along, I'd like to know ways I can reduce my overall file size so that my photoscenery can someday be uploaded to Avsim, etc.

I am working on a roughly 8 mile by 8 mile city that I captured at 15 level zoom in SBuilder. I have all the seasons and blends done for 1 of the three photos I split it into. Thus far, those files equal ~1.3 gigs. Now I don't think a final project approaching 4 gigs will be acceptable. Any hints on how to compress the .bmps from 188MB?

Hi,

When compiling with resample you can set the amount of compression you want. I am not sure if this can be set from SBuilderX though. Usually a compression value of about 85 gives best balance between file size and quality.

Btw, you might want to be careful with distributing scenery made with Google Maps or Bing Maps imagery. The license of that data does not allow you to distribute it.

Thanks for your advice, Arno! 85 compression really did a great job on my file size/quality issue. No worries about the photosource, they are from USGS I believe off of the USDA set.

Plan to post a few pictures in a few days of my scenery status. Still trying to decide if I can learn gmax to produce a groundpoly for the taxi/runway/apron of the central airport in my scenery.

This website is amazing and a wealth of information. Thanks be to whomever maintains it.

Glad you fixed it.

USGS is indeed a very nice source of good quality images that can be used in scenery. Those making scenery for the US are lucky :).
