• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

SBuilderX - Understanding the Custom terrain.cfg

Greetings,

I've just fired up SBuilderX for the first time in a while, and I was presented with the option to install a custom terrain.cfg file, as recommended by the installer software.

A few questions:

A.) With the various addons I have (GEX, UTX, etc. etc.), will this custom terrain.cfg file somehow cripple any custom textures which have been defined?

B.) If I install the custom terrain.cfg file, will users of my created scenery need to have that config as well, or will it function with a base install?

I deferred the installation of the file at this time even though I know it creates a backup, but your input is appreciated!

Hi Greg.

If you have an addon that already altered the terrain.cfg file, then you'd be better off NOT installing the change, as it would conflict with already installed changes.

The readme file of those addons may include instructions for using the custom terrain.cfg, which is the file by Richard Ludowise and Luis Féliz-Tirado.

I think in the case of UTX, if you install the custom terrain.cfg and then run UTX it will fix it up. There might be other things that aren't so easy to fix up. I assume FTX will also correct things if you run its config program, but I don't know about Victoria+ which does make changes to terrain.cfg for example. If you are diligent you can make the changes by hand if you just compare your terrain.cfg to the custom one.

But then the dilemma is if you are going to distribute a scenery should you use the stuff from the custom terrain.cfg or only the default one for compatibility?

Thanks all - the primary question is surrounding compatibility with other user's systems, so rather than require users to mess with their config files, I'll base all my design on the more standard package.

As it stands now, I am going to be basing my design work on addons I have installed, so there is already some unknown factors as to how my work will play out.

The compatibility on my own computer is secondary, considering the software would have backed up the original .cfg file. I'll set the alert in SBuilderX to no longer bug me about that file, and carry on.

Thanks,
-Greg
