• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

set to hole not working

I'll preface all my questions by first saying I have looked for the answer but am still stumped :) With that being said, thanks in advance for any and all advice.

1) After excluding water and adding a hydro poly, I traced the outline of the island I am re-creating but when I try to set it as a hole, it will not let me "click to set parent poly."

2) Is there any way to duplicate (i.e. copy and paste) a polygon in an sbuilderx project so I can assign different excludes without having to redraw a separate poly or compile separate .bgl files? FSX_KML seems to do this easily but I can't stand the cursors that GE uses...

3) If I "exclude" an airport/airport background in an sbuilderx project, can I add a new airport background on top of that within the same project?

Sorry if none of these make sense...My "simple" scenery project looks like it will be turning into a long-term project! I love it :)

The "hole" poly must be in the same project with the parent poly. Make the hole poly, right click and slect as hole, the cursor tip will now show click to select parent, I slide to the edge of the parent poly and click the outer edge. You need to be accurate or at least I found that to be the case, so you can zoom in on the outer edge of the poly to make it easier to click.

While in Polygon mode (the tip of the cursor will read "poly) click to highlight all points (vertexs) of the poly to be copied, select Edit | Copy from the menu, then go back and select Edit | Place, the cursor tip will now read Place, click to place the duplicate poly. It will continue to place copies unless you go back and hit Edit | Place on the menu.

Yes on the Airport Background. The exclusion for the default does not have to be an outline of the existing layout. The exclusion just needs to intersect the boundary at some point. Very easy to make a quick, simple rectangle to get rid of the old.

As always, thank you for the quick response to elementary questions. I was able to make it work finally!

I successfully created an island (at it's most basic, minus shorelines) that looks much better than the default! Unfortunately the default was also in the wrong position, including the mesh, so the new island is flat. But I'm downloading FS Genesis world mesh as we speak and hopefully that will fix things!

Can't remeber the different islands that are being worked on, Samoa?? There should be some type of data available... somewhere! Try the USGS Seamless server; http://seamless.usgs.gov/ They may have something, as it's American Samoa?:D

If they have data, it depends on the source type as to how hard it will be to make mesh. A GeoTiff file goes realllll easy!

Unfortunately I can't find it on the seamless server. It has a picture of it, but says no data available. A science agency actually has the main American Samoa island in 10m .e00 format, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to go from .e00 to a mesh.

Additionally, I've decided to try a bit easier island first, one with less steep elevation. This time it's Mangareva of the Gambier Islands in French Polynesia, formerly the staging point for all travel to Pitcairn Island (final destination of the mutinous crew of the HMS Bounty) before France restricted all outside travel due to fallout from nuclear testing.

But first things first, I'm going to see if the FS-Genesis mesh offers the solution, as from what I can tell, the creator of that mesh is using the same source I would be using anyway.

5 hours later...

FSGenesis world mesh (all 3.8gig) downloaded and installed, and...

presto, we have hills right where they should be! Which is amazing because the default fsx island was quite a bit off from where I redrew the new one, leaving my pre-fsgenesis mesh island to be completely flat.

The FSG mesh makes life a bit easier. For US islands, often you can find data from noaa. they have some data explorers, but sometimes you just have to dig down into individual "service" web sites.

Converting some of these data formats pretty much requires GIS software. There are some open-GIS programs around, (fwtools comes to mind) but if you do a lot you might need to use payware.

I never did get good data for a couple places, like Jarvis, Howland, Baker Islands.

Lately I have been doing Easter Island (Rapa Nui) by tracing the Google Earth background.
