• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Setting Duration Parameter

I have been looking at placement of effects using xml. So far I have managed to get most of the parameters to work (I notice that the compiler will let a badly formed parameter string through) The code below is supposed to set the effect for 15 seconds

<FSData version="9.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="bglcomp.xsd" >
<SceneryObject lat="26.0261904166771" lon="-81.0352165997028" alt="0"
altitudeIsAgl="TRUE" pitch="0" bank="0" heading="0"
imageComplexity="NORMAL" >
<Effect effectName="fx_ForestFire.fx"
effectParams="DURATION=15;" />
</SceneryObject>
</FSData>

But the effect just stays on. I assume I have done something wrong :)

OK and here is another one. This code for a windsock compiles to bgl fine but there is no windsock in the scenery :(

<SceneryObject lat="26.0257404954133" lon="-81.0352033562958" alt="0" altitudeIsAgl="TRUE" pitch="0" bank="0" heading="0" imageComplexity="NORMAL" >
<Windsock poleHeight="5.5" sockLength="2.0" lighted="FALSE" >
<PoleColor red="127" blue="127" green="127" />
<SockColor red="255" blue="0" green="127" />
</Windsock>
</SceneryObject>

Fx FOrest Fire

For the forestfire you might need to use

SOM=som_begin,som_end;

This has worked for me

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<FSData version="9.0" xmlns:xsi='http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance' xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="bglcomp.xsd">

<SceneryObject lat="N28.415097" lon="W81.606082" alt="180" pitch="0" bank="0" heading="213" altitudeIsAgl="TRUE" imageComplexity="NORMAL">
<Effect effectName="fx_ForestFire.fx" effectParams="HOD=19,19;MOH=00,02;SOM=00,00;"/>
</SceneryObject>

</FSData>

Maybe you have to do the following :confused:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>
<FSData version="9.0" xmlns:xsi='http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance' xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="bglcomp.xsd">

<SceneryObject lat="N28.415097" lon="W81.606082" alt="180" pitch="0" bank="0" heading="213" altitudeIsAgl="TRUE" imageComplexity="NORMAL">
<Effect effectName="fx_ForestFire.fx" effectParams="SOM=00,15;"/>
</SceneryObject>

</FSData>

OK sorted the windsock problems - it helps if you do not try to place them in an excluded area where all objects are excluded :o

Not got the duration to work yet

I'm not sure about the correct syntax of the duration-function but I also would suggest to use the time-of-day-parameters. Or maybe try a longer duration. If I'm right the effect starts before FS is fully setup, meaning the 15 secs maybe over when you are finally able to see something in FS. ;)

Hi Thorsten

Thanks for that - The effect appears permanently on. I need to play around with the time of day parameters. I don't think I understand them very well I had assumed that they would cause the effect to repeat or be present at certain time so that if I set someing as MOY = 1,12; DOM=1,31; HOD = 0,23; SOM = 0,15; the effect would appear for 15 seconds every minute and that I could not leave out the parameters preceding SOM. What I am trying to get to is an effect which lasts for a period of time and then goes away and does not repeat.

Also it would be nice to set something up so that, for example it would appear for 1 hour at DUSK.

Also I am just wondering why the DURATION Parameter is there is it does not seem to do anything. more experimentation I think :)

an effect that is switched on by another event.

Maybe duration is only used for an effect
that is switched on by another event.

Cant see how it would ever work for 15 sec
on start up.

Sorry, my bad. ;)

Why don'T you just create an effect that emits particles for only 15 seconds. This might be easier.
On the other hand if the SDK says the duration should work, why doesn't it? :scratchch

Maybe try another fx.

I could create the effect to do that but this is for my Scenery Maker utility which is placing Effects. At the moment I allow the user to set the duration parameter on the expectation that it works :(

I agree that the SDK just says it will set the duration and the example they give is 2.5 seconds. Perhaps that relates to something like a dust effect associated with something like a plane landing and does not have any effect on static placed effects. Ho Hum :)
