• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 Sketchup 2025 - PBR textures implemented

Hello. I see that there is a new version of Sketchup, called Skethcup 2025. With the newest version it is possible to add PBR-textures directly through an extention and also adjust the PBR settings within the app. I would love to hear peoples thoughts on how these settings are looking within the sim.

Hi Vetle:

Thanks for the heads-up on this recent release; it looks like a rather substantial enhancement to Sketchup. :)

I am pleased to see that it is referred to as the "Desktop" edition.

It remains to be seen whether some new features only work via an online connection to Trimble or 3rd party servers.

Justin Geis (aka 'The Sketchup Essentials' guy) has a good review of Sketchup 2025 here:

A good 'overview; video:

More on this to come, as I look into the new release. ;)

Thanks for yor input, Gary! I agree, this looks quite exciting, and to play with the idea of subsribing to the 2025 version; if the features following the 2025 version of sketchup is consistent through both MCX conversion and then into msfs I would say we have something close to an optimal way of making scenery for msfs (!?!). It seems to be possible to render and adjust values such as normals, reflectiveness and so on within the software itself, in realtime. Having that option greatly reduces the workflow, and trial-and-error in regards to the textures could be [almost] eliminated?

I will consider signing up for the trial version to test the features and how it cooperates with MCX and msfs, but if anyone already have the version or is in the process of using it, please feel free to reply with your input :)

I am currently using the trial version of Sketchup2025 with its PBR-feature. It is a powerful tool which renders in realtime, and pbr textures are also easily downloaded from the sketchup 3d warehouse directly into the software.

Exporting the project as a .gltf is done via the same extension as with previous versions, and importing into mcx works flawlessly. Only change when usin pbr-materials directly from sketchup is that the normals need to be downloaded individually from the warehouse and imported into mcx as before.

I am however a little uncertain if the annual price tag off around $300 is worth it. The rendering engine is nice and all, but you can still guesstimate somewhat what it will look like when just using the older, free versions.

Ill continue testing throughout the trial period and report back

Still using 2017 version....fully installed. PBR makes no difference in Sketchup, only in the sim. And since you will need MCX anyway.....you can visualize PBR to some extent in MCX.

yeah, not paying for Sketchup....2017 works fine lol!
