• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D v4 SOLVED!!!! Missing shadows on specific groundpolygon layer

Hi everybody,

just jump into the v4 world, and have to say, I am deeply impressed - "what a wonderful world"! And a lot of new challenges as well...

So yesterday, I wanted to have a look on a former FSX built scenery of mine how it performes in v4, and most parts appear really nicely, except for some strange behaviours I will try to solve it next days (weeks, months...).
First strange thing I noticed is missing shadows on a specific groundpolygon layer, that is the same for all my concrete and asphalt polygons, all hard surface edge layers. Neither aircraft shadows nor any object shadows are shown, but bizarrely on all other layers BELOW and ABOVE, when ONLY THIS LAYER IS ENABLED...

My ground polys are done as follows:

- Built in gmax (FSX), exported into FS mdl
- Imported into MCX, added (i. e. transparency) or changed (i. e. specular colours to 0 because of preventing shine on the surfaces...)
- setting layers to the different polys

Because of the kind of the airport background I used lots of layers, all of them from layer 16 upwards, where 16 is the bottom layer with grass. I increase the layers by 2, so 18, 20, 22 and so on up to 40 on top that shows dirt and weathering. All layers without any problem, but especially layer 30 (gutter), 32 (hard surface egdes) to 34 (asphalt and concrete) prevent the shadows on its surface! This problems occurs on every part of the airfield, also if there is NO AFCAD path underneath (like i. e. the runway...) That is very strange...

What I've done so far:

1. I enabled the shadow option "receive" on all objects, clouds etc in the Sim like suggested in other forums.
2. I imported the ground poly mdls in the latest MCX supporting v4 by "ground polygon wizard", allocated needed options to it and converted it by ticking P3Dv4.

There is no improvement unfortunately. If all grundpolys would have appeared the same way I would grasp the nettle and reworked all polys from the very beginning. But I hope there is a solution to get the reason for the only 2 or 3 layers inside all others....

Thanks in advance for hints and help, also for other users with same issues by this thread....

It's strange - although I disabled all other layers except the concrete/asphalt layer, no shadows. I converted the concrete layer with negative value but no change. I checked my layers, all were built the same way. So should the problem not appear at all layers?

Okay, my problem seems to be solved! I don't know why, but P3DV4 seems to prevent shadows on layers above value 32 ! Layers up to level 31 show shadows fine. Will do some more experiments this evening with layers above 40 to see if there is a specific scale or the limit is 31 indeed....
