• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi all, I decided to give FSX KML a go.
I want in the main to use it for flattening areas around airports and for blending.
I have installed FSX KML and also FWTools.
I have looked for a tutorial on how to actually START a project but can't seem to find one.
Would someone be kind enough to point me in the right direction.

Regards
Richard

Thanks Matthew I found that, but I can't get FSXKML to start.
Do I have to run the build. I have added all the paths but the build button does not "light up".

Sorry but I just don't where to start. I'm sure this is not the first time you have had this.

Try this...

1) Create a poly for your airport in Google Earth.
2) Save it as a KML file.
3) In FSX KML click the "Add KML" button.
4) Tag the polygon with "Airport_Backgrounds_Flatten_ExcludeAutoGen"
5) Click on the Vertices tab and click Edit button then click "Set Elevation" button. Enter the elevation of your airport, click OK, then click Close say yes to save changes to vertices
6) Click on Build tab and then Build button. And it should build your BGL file and copy it to the addon scenery directory.

Partial success Matthew,
First of all as soon as I click on the poly/path button in Google the description panel pops up and that obscures the view.
I do not understand the line tag the poly.
When I add a name and altitude to the box the vertices in Google disappear.
I cannot then get them back. When I am in Google there is no response to my mouse buttons.
I have a feeling I do not have things set up properly anyway.
Where is the tutorial that takes you through all the basic beginnings of how to use FSX KML and using the poly tool/path tools in Google?
When I start FSX KML I get the message
"an invalid character was found in text content Line 1 MZP" now whats all that about?
Sorry to be so dumb but I do need to know how to do this.

Partial success Matthew,

Move it to the side of the screen.

I do not understand the line tag the poly.

This is done within FSX_KML. Not in GoogleEarth. "Tagging" is the term used to describe telling FS what type of vector data you are putting down.

You tell this to FS within the FSX_KML program. Once you have loaded your .kml file into FSX_KML, you will see on the left side of the screen, a listing of the objects in your kml file. Next to them, is a drop-down list of various tags. Select the one you need and go.

For airport backgrounds, that is usually Airport_Backgrounds_MaskClassMap_Exclude_AutoGen

When I add a name and altitude to the box the vertices in Google disappear.

Don't bother messing with altitude within GoogleEarth. Set altitude in FSX_KML always.

You should be able to name the poly what you want. But don't hit ENTER after typing the name, that will close the window and GE assumes you're done. That's standard Windows convention stuff--true of any windows app.

I cannot then get them back. When I am in Google there is no response to my mouse buttons.

That doesn't sound right, maybe GoogleEarth is not set up right? Really, all you do is
1) load GoogleEarth, go to your area of interest
2) select Polygon button. Draw your area.
3) Save as... kml
4) start FSX_KML. Load your kml file.
5) apply a tag to your poly (I explained how above)
6) click Build, you're done

It really is easy

When I start FSX KML I get the message
"an invalid character was found in text content Line 1 MZP" now whats all that about?

When you saved the file in Google Earth did you save it as type ".KML" because by default Google Earth saves as ".KMZ"

Hi Matthew, ok I'm almost there.
Have got a KML file but for some reason there is no BGL.

2 hrs later.
OK Matthew I have cracked it.
Job done.
NOW the next question is this, is there any way to get rid of the "cliff" effect that surrounds a flattened area?
I am using GEN X Photo Scenery.

There is a way, actually two ways that I can think of:

Method #1 (most difficult): use the terrain SDK (resample.exe) to modify the terrain mesh around the airport to eliminate the cliff. This is what Justin Tyme is doing with his latest payware mesh over at FSGenesis.

Method #2 (less difficult, but can look strange): Use GE/FSX_KML to add progressively larger concentric flattens at gradually lower or higher altitudes (depending on what you need to eliminate your cliff or depression) around your main flatten
