• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Terrain mesh

hello guys,

sorry for asking this question, it was prolly answered already. I just want to make the terrain look more realistic, I've donne putting the photoscenery on my airport. but the FS mesh isn't accurate I want to modify the terrain, that means where there's a slope I want to put it, where it stays the same elevation i want to maintain it. As you can see the real runway is going down a slope in the default scenery, I was to modify that:

Now the same thing for this river, it's a lil river valley, not too deep, so I want to try to replicate like in the real world, a small river valley of about 20m deep. how can I do that?

Nick

P.S: if this has been answered already, please can someone link it.

Hi,

Are you sure your image is placed in FS correctly? I see the runway in the photo does not line up with the runway in FS. For most airport the runway data in FS is quite accurate, so it should line up.

About your question, to alter the terrain elevation you would have to create an elevation BGL file. But to do that you need some DEM (elevation data), without that it can be hard.

If you just want to alter only a few places, it might be easier to make a new flatten for those areas, with the altitude you want.

yes the runway doesnt line up coz I was just testing different resolution of the photoreal. thanks for the answer, I can get the elevation using google earth or virtual earth, coz I can't get the topographic map of mauritius.

can you tell me which program is best to create elevation bgl?

cheers

I hate to go against Arno as that means I am probably wrong :o ...but I have found that most large airports in Alaska are accurately placed and that the smaller strips of which we have very many are often out of whack.

Undoubtedly that could be our ground control or orthorectification in some areas but often the large airport will be spot on with our imagery but the small strip just down the way will be way off.

whoops looks like it was the imagery in this case :o

resampler will create a DEM (digital elevation model).
But you will need an elivation model to give to resampler.

You can edit/create vectors with ADE or sbuilderx to to fix the area around the airport.

I'll back you on this one. Your observations are correct. The great majority of runways in FSX are *very* accurately placed, especially larger airports and ILS runways. There are, however, plenty of runways where the input data is not correct. When a team of 5 processes 24,000+ airports, time must be allocated wisely - the smaller strips just don't get as much love as the larger airports. :)

I guess I should have said that as long as the airport runway was generated from the Jepessen data it should be accurate. But for smaller air strips that is not always the case and those will in general be less accurate. But given the fact this one seems to have quite a long concrete runway, I expect it should be in the Jepessen data :).

Careful relining on Jeppesen too much. They are after all a data aggregator. Garbage in garbage out. The FAA capstone program professed the accuracy of the Jeppesen elevation model but as we knew and they eventually learned the data is not perfect. Anything North of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data (>60deg) is all National Elevation Data (NED). The NED in Alaska is > 50 years old based on contour lines referenced from Seattle. This leads to numerous inaccuracies including: mountains a half mile out of place and peaks listed hundreds of feet lower than they are.

Not that big a deal for simming (other than the rounded peaks of the NED) but a big deal for the real world!

Jeppesen is a fine company and does a great job but they generally resell data others have collected. GIGO.
