• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Texture Libraries/FSX

Hi Arno and how are you?

I have tried several times over the last couple of years to create 3D objects using G-Max but have had a singular lack of success.

Yesterday however I stumbled across Sketchup and have finally managed to create an object.

It is only a simple rectangle with a pitched roof with some default Sketchup textures.

I have successfully followed the process and it shows up in FSX fine.

The buildings that I want to make are, fortunately, simple ones, mainly farm barns.

However I need some textures other than the Sketchup default ones.

Are there any texture libraries available and if so where?

Google is supposed to be coming out with more textures. But who knows when. With a little work you can make your own textures from photos you take.

Hello Richard...

Google SketchUp website has other textures, They call them materials. Some of them of prior versions also. They can be loaded easily through to lastest. You also can take FSX or FS9 textures and convert them as such that Google can use them also.

I hope that helps.

Hi,

If you do not want to make your own textures from photos, I would first see if some of the default FS textures can be reused.

All great ideas... It is, however, beyond easy to create your own. If you want a barn, just google barn and look at photo's. Grab a photo, edit in your fav graphics program so that you have whatever part of it you want for your texture and save as jpg. You can then load that directly into GSU.

Another great feature, is the photo texture ability in GSU. You can create a face, and then grab a part of any photo right from inside GSU. Play around with it. You won't break it....and it's really quite fun. When I was learning, I wanted a door...so I choose a picture of a door and it auto applies it to the face you selected. Instant photo-real door. :) You could do anything.. an entire building facade if you want.

Again, play around with it.. very very simple.

Hi all and many thanks for your help.

I have found some photos of barns built by a UK company.

However how do I use default FSX textures as suggested by Arno?

Regards

Richard

Hi Richard,

To use the default textures I would make a copy of them in JPG format so that you can easier load them into SketchUp. Then when converting to MDL you would have to make sure that the texture name becomes the name of the default texture again. The match function in the mass texture editor can help you with this.

I found out that you have to open the .dds texture file with Photoshop and flip it vertical before saving it as a jpeg.
Copy all the textures(including _bump, _lm and _specular) that you are going to use in to the same folder as your model is also very handy.

Well I converted some default texture bmp's to jpg and then got hopelessly lost.

I THINK I loaded them in to GSU but nothing shows in the paint bucket??

Hello Richard,

If you use the default textures do make sure you do flip it vertical before saving as a jpg,... otherwise you will get misaligned textures. You don't have to include the _lm or others... you don't even have to go through the mass Texture editor (MCX) with them since they have already been made into a dds etc... When going through MCX with your SketchUp Model,... just replace the corresponding texture file with the default FSX or FS9 dds file.

I hope that makes it a little clearer.

You will have to goto in the Create texture function in GSU,... click on the paint bucket icon and a window will appear. On the upper right hand corner of the window it has a create texture icon. Make sure you rename it to the texture name as used by FSX or FS9.

Thanks for all your help guys.

However by my own admission I am "technically challenged" and am being a bit dumb about this.

Would one of you be kind enough to write a sort of mini tutorial about this.

The whole process, what to do and HOW to do it. Are any special programmes needed, i.e for flipping the default textures.

Sorry to be a pain...........

Also I have noted that in Scenery/World/Textures there are over 3000 textures, that must be a bit of an overkill, any suggestions on this?

I also have another question but will ask as a separate topic.

Regards

Richard.

Ok.... Richard...

I'll write something down and I should have it done (hopefully) later on this evening (Wednesday)....

Hi Doug and very many thanks.

I will go through this, hopefully tomorrow, and post the out come, but it looks a good tutorial.

Hi Doug, well I managed to do it.

Good job thanks.

Perhaps Arno should put your tutorial up as a sticky for others.

Two points however,

1. I couldn't get GIMP to work because it does not recognise DDS format. However I googled "does gimp support dds" and it bought up a small plug-in. I installed this and all was well. So I don't know if its worth mentioning that.

2. As you predicted I fell at the last hurdle with regard to creating a collection. I just could not get it to work.

I shall have a read of the GSU documentation on this.

Otherwise every thing was fine.

And as I always say "If I can do it............"

I'm glad that part of it worked for you... I was planning on adding the GIMP plugin location... but since I don't have GIMP and I had a deadline to meet (Wednesday or Thursday morning)...

Tell me what you did when Creating the Collection in GSU?

Updated: The GIMP dds plug-in location has been added to the Tutorial.
