• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Textured plane flickers on background

Good day all,

I'm currently working on an airport terminal. To mark the gates with the correct numbers, I've created one plane for each gate and textured them with the numbers. In FSX it shows up realy nice when I'm close to the number and gate, but from a distance the numbers flickers into the background.
I've tried to move the "number plane" futher away from the background wall, but with no better results.

Any suggestions? :)

Hi,

How did you make those polygons? As FSX MDL files? For best results you should tweak them as ground polygons using the FS2002 techniques.

No, there is no zbias in FSX. The only way would be to give the polygon an offset manually. But that often does not give the desired results.

I used ModelConverterX with the FSX model format.
The whole terminal is exported in one piece. Is the best way still to export it as a FS2002 MDL?

Yes, for the ground polygons it is still best to export them with the FS2002 techniques. The ground polygon wizard of ModelConverterX will create that technique as well.

For the building you'd better use the FSX format of course.

Hehe, sound good, but how can I get rid of the flickering then? :)

Tried to experiment with different settings in ModelConverterX, but still the same problem.

PS!
The gate marking is on the jetway wall, not on the ground.

Ah, not on the ground :).

I would try to give the polygon an offset then. You can do that in ModelConverterX as well, if you specify a zbias in the material editor it will be converted to a polygon offset at export.

Isn't a "polygon offset" another way of saying move the polygon further from the jetway? He said he's tried that. One thing you could do would be to model them as separate metal plates, on little legs out from the jetway.

If these are your jetway models, remove a jetway polygon behind the number plates.

I must admit, I have NO idea what zbias is.
But I tried with the random number "15" in the setting, and now it shows up fine. :p Other objects textured with the same .dds got messed up thought, but thats easier to fix.

Thank you!

The problem still occures in my scenery, where objects are placed close together.
The setting mentioned above can't be used on larger textures, as it messes up the placement.
Any other tweaks possible?

Edit:
It's even visible in MCX. The door is about 30cm wide, but it still flickers.

If you have two polygons right on top of each other this is just what FS does - AFAIK there is little you can do, short of solving that problem...

I'm not very into using LODs (yet), but what about creating different LODs? So when visible from far away, it may be placed futher away from the other object?

:o

Hi,

If it is a matter of the lettering that you made another texture for, then the solution is easy as it would be a matter of texturing.
Open the jetway wall texture in your paint program and add the lettering as another layer. Then flatten and save. That will help, but you may have to include mips to your texture to avoid further flickering.

Why not simply choose the "sign" object, select the edges, save as a spline object, then use that spline to Shape Merge a hole in the wall (i.e., remove the mesh behind the sign).

Hi,

Yes, you can use LOD's to help solve this problem. Different plates, placed at differing distances from the jetway.

It's just a square plane with a number on, and then alpha is used to remove the number background texture. So I guess it would have to be completly redone in that case.
I'll try with the LODs. Thank you! :)
