• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Textures

I am designing some Buildings for my Airport and I want to draw my own textures from scratch to be used as Materials in FSX Gmax. I am trying to keep the poly count down, other than drawing the textures right in Gmax. I have several draw programs on my computer I can use.
I find it quite hard to get around to find photos of the textures I need.

Is there a tutorial that I can use to get me started? Frank!

Tutorials for creating textures in various programs exist. I use Photoshop, so finding tutorials for creating a variety of textures is very easily accomplished!

You might want to use Goggle to search for tutorials applicable to the program you are planning to use to create your textures.

Like you I find it almost impossible to find photos to use for creating a complete texture and end up either creating a texture or blend and modify a generic photo texture.

Thank you for your assistance.
The first requirement I feel is the size, resolution of the material to be used in Gmax to be eventualy used in FSX. From this information I could use to draw my texture in the draw program of my choice. Then is the convertion to wharever the material requires to work in Gmax.

My first project would be a texture for verticle aluminum sideing for the airport hangers and other buildings. Frank!

The size of the texture will probably be determined by how close to the hanger you are going to be and how much detail you are requiring. Usually I find that if a hanger is a main component of the scenery I will use a 1024x1024 texture.

Usually I will create a bmp file which I will then assign to a FSX material in the Material Editor of Max/Gmax. Later (for FSX use) the bmp file will be converted to a DDS file that is placed in the appropriate texture folder in FSX.
