• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Tips for creating Taxiway lights for Prepar3D version 3

Hello.

Does anyone have some good hints on making some nice looking taxiway lights for Prepar3D v3?
That is basically the only thing I have not managed to create for Prepar3Dv3.

Any help would be welcome.
I tried some searching but found nothing of use for Prepar3Dv3.

For P3D v3 same technics as always are used. Texture splash on the ground and emissive bloom light bulb on the night...

Try it.

I did try this as this is the same way I have done my approach lights.
But taxi lights with the same material settings and texture type does not work for my taxi lights.

Could this be because the taxi lights ''9 total'' are in one and same scene, where as the taxi way lights are both smaller and only one light in the scene?

Because the light fades away in the distance when I get far from it, but the aproach lights do not.

I guess you modified the mipmaps right?

Anyway, you are not supposed to see taxi lights from far away of the airport...

Yes I modified them to have same color as the taxi light and gave them a new unique material name.
When i am maybe 50 meters away from the taxiway I hardly see any lights any longer.

The runway is 1799m long, so would adding the edge lights in one large scene along side
the runway make it more visible instead of placing one and one light at a time?

I think maybe the reason for them fading out so quickly is because it is so small?
If I were to place lights along side the 1799m runway in one big scene then maybe the would not fade out as quick?

The only difference between the taxi lights and approach lights as it is now, is that the approach lights
9 in total is one big scene where as the taxi light is only one small light in the scene, so maybe that is why?

Yeah.

Create big planes for the light so when the mipmaps come along they fit a huge plane (5m x 5m) and they can be seen from far

If I want to make runway edge lights, would I go about that the same way as the taxiway edge lights?
Should I not be able to see the lights at the same time as I see the approach lights?

So this is how?
This plane is 5x5m, and then I make the light texture on that and it will be good from a decent distance ?
I only make the model in sketchup and then add textures and materials etc in Gmax.

Take in mind that, when you apply the texture to that big planes it should be a tinny texture in the middle with black all around, to fit all the plane. This black will be made transparent on the material settings (take a search for it, I cant remember).

Then, on the mipmaps, this little point is gonna be going bigger and bigger, and will be covering more square (plane) at every mipmap. That's how it works. Try to figure out.

Anyway, 5x5 could be ok for rwy lights. Taxilights should maybe ok using 2x2 planes or so (just try-error)
