• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 Transparencies

Hi everybody, sorry if the issue has already been treated but I'm stuck on this problem.
I was able to get a satisfactory appearance for surfaces like glass of windows (i.e. in terminal or tower) using the opacity slider in Material Editor but if I get closer and look through them I notice that I can see trees or clouds just as if the inside walls, ceiling or surfaces don't exist.
This happens also after checking the "2-sides" option for the material applied to the whole building.
Where's my mistake?
Thanks for any suggestion.

Stefano

Hi Stefano,

By default all polygons are single-sided, so normally there is indeed no inside for your building and you will just look through it.

The double sided option you mention is in the material editor I think, but that one is not supported by the FS2004 gamepack. You need to start your material name with ds_ to get a double sided material.

But even when you use double sided materials, you can still have drawing order problems with the building. That depends on how complex it is in general.

Thanks for clear answer, Arno, now I see where the conceptual mistake was, the walls and ceiling of my building are polygons, not 3d elements.
In this case I simply will give up trying to get transparent windows and will apply a glass-like opaque texture to them.

However, could it be a workaround if I model a building starting with a solid shape and obtaining the inside space by a boolean operation, in order to have a 3-dimensional walls and ceiling?

Yes that works, but there can still be viewing problems when looking through more than one pane of glass.
