• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Using the Rotate Tool.

I have watched the video on how to use this tool and it shows a clock face and a vault door.

However I want to be able to open a hanger door and no matter how many ways I draw the door I cannot get the rotate tool to, well rotate the door open.

More help required please.

Regards

Richard.

PS Despite all my questions I am making good progress with Sketchup. Much more success than I have ever had with G-Max.

Hello Richard,...

The rotate function in GSU? I believe your not going to animate the door opening with GSU... unless you came upon something new... the only animate function in GSU has to do with a "walk-in presentation" function.

The only way to animate the doors opening is by Drawing the doors etc through GSU and tranfering it to GMAX. which you can do so by MCX.

...and even then you can't actually have the door open/close on command in FSX unless you compile the model with the FS2004 tools, and add the conditional animation control with Arno's CAT tool.

The rotate tool is only for positioning...it does not animate. As Psycen said, no animation in SU.

I've used MCX to move a couple of SU models over into Gmax using 3DS as an intermediate format, in one case to add animation, and I found something important to keep in mind. When I opened the model in Gmax, the faces had been grouped according to material. In other words, all faces with material "A" applied had been grouped together. Took me a while to figure this out. :) So if you're planning on building a model in SU and then moving it to Gmax to animate selected parts, you can make those parts easier to select in Gmax by assigning them unique materials. That way they won't be grouped together with other parts. Hope that makes sense.

I also found that the materials have to be reassigned in Gmax. This is not so bad as it sounds, it mostly involves using the material editor to tell Gmax which textures to use for which materials. The materials will already be assigned to the proper faces.

OK, I think I will stick with GSU which I seem to be able to get on with.

I have not been able to make head nor tail of G Max over the years.

It is not a matter of life or death if I cannot rotate a door, or anything else for that matter.

Thanks again guys.

Regards

Richard
