• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Water Not Showing from Google Earth?

Hello all, my first post, and hopefully I won't be bugging you too much in this forum. I am having a little bit of a problem. I am trying to get the Google Earth Poly into FS X. I have successfully covered the state I am working with, build it properly with FSX_KML, but however, no water shows at all what so ever. It has excluded the bays, lakes, and rivers. I know I'm doing something wrong, can someone help me out here? Thanks!

You don't really give much info there.

You must export your polygons out of GoogleEarth as .kml files. Are you getting that far?

Yes I am....I'm able to even compile the BGL file from that. I don't know what's happening. I have exported the .KML file by doing a "Save As" function. I still don't get the right results.

Are you tagging a polygon that you intend to be water as "Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Ocean_Perennial" (or whichever water poly you want?).

That is the next step.

And yes, posting your kml file would say a thousand words...

KML file attached....

Hey all, as requested by popular demand, here is my KML file. Hope you can all help out....This is copied and pasted from it. Thanks!

Lance,

When you wrote "Did you mean to set the whole state as an airport baackground?" I think that is what I was doing wrong. I am going to try again and leave that blank. I'm actually planning something really nice if I have the time for it with FS X. I'm using R.I. not only because it's where I live, but because it is a smaller state. So what you're saying is, I shouldn't have an airport background thing on there at all, is that what I'm correct to assume? Thanks again for your help!

I think (but can't tell for sure) that your goal here is to do a scenery of Rhode Island, or at least give it more accurate shorelines and islands.

Actually, that's not a "beginners" project, given the multiple islands there in the bay.

The way *I* would start this project, would be to load the relevant cvx****.bgl file into TMFViewer program that comes with the SDK. This is your starting point, because as Lance indicates, the FSX world is entirely land, with water polygons over it.

So, what you need to do with RI, is look at TMFViewer and see which existing polygons you are going to have to exclude. Then, make a poly with the coordinates that touch all of the polys you want to exclude, and tag it with something like "Exclude_Hydro_Polygons_Generic_Ocean_Perennial" or whatever hydro type Microsoft used there by RI.

Then you'll also have old SHORELINES to exlude there as well. So you'll have to create polys for those also, and tag them with "Exclude_Shorelines_Generic_Ocean_Perennial" or "Bay_Harbor..." and so forth.

THEN...you will have all land where the bay and sea is at Rhode Island. So now you can begin placing your custom Hydro polygons in.

That's where your GoogleEarth really comes in handy, and the kml file you exported.

As was said, you really have tackled a BIG complex thing here, and RI is not something I would start off with. Actually you could start with it, but start by looking at a much smaller area, such as around Block Island. Load the relevant cvx***.bgl file into TMFViewer and that's your starting point for any FSX_KML project.

Hope this helps you get a start on what you're trying to do. Think smaller...at first.

You can build ALL of this into one single large kml file. You have to do some cutting and pasting but it pays off in terms of the number of files FSX has to read and parse, and also organizationally.

Thanks Rhett.....maybe I will start something smaller. I changed my area to the northern part of the state where I live, so I'll hopefully be able to tell the difference. Thanks again! I'm going to give it another whirl......and thanks for the tip with the TMF viewer....

John
