• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX What to do with odd-sized textures?

In my 2nd SU-FSX model (simpler one) I have included a surfboard. The surfboard itself isn't modelled as such, instead it is a rectangular area (same form factor as a real surfboard) onto which I added a photo texture.

When I import into ModelConverterX it shows a warning in the event log indicating that this texture is not a power of 2. That is indeed correct, but if I make it square it will not longer be a surfboard.

What should I then do to properly model this?

Do you mean make a square in which the surfboard fits and then place the texture there? That instead of having a rectangular area where the texture fits?

Power of 2 can be something like 64 x 256 - it doesn't have to be square - each dimension just has to be a power of 2.

When you resize the texture in MCX, the texture mapping will self-adjust and your board will still be properly textured.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Rob, that is the answer I was looking for. Tried it and the warning was gone. It is only a little tricky to resize the photo texture on SketchUp.

Cheers!

Hi,

I usually find it easiest to adjust the size at the source, like you did in SketchUp. But you could also do it during conversion in ModelConverterX. The mass texture editor can resize them to the closest power of two while converting to DDS or DXT BMP.

Thanks, that is what I have been doing lately. When I grab a texture out of the net I first rework it to a Power of 2 before using it in GSU. Has been working well.
