• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Widescreen monitor and FSX

Folks,
sorry for the very simple question here but this is where people know things.

If I connect a widescreen monitor to the PC does the FSX display widen to 16:9 format or stretch the 4:3 format image. In other words will a square still be a square or extend to a rectangle?

Cheers

2D panel will most likely stretch... but who use that anyway. The 3D view will adjust correctly as long as you make sure you run it in a widescreen resolution.

Widescreen info

Thanks Lars,
just as I had assumed, but better to check.

Going out to buy it now!

There is also a setting in the FSX.cfg. WideViewAspect= set this to true.

Not sure if it works, but a google search brought up several hits.

Widescreen OK

Thanks all,
the monitor was connected up and after reconfiguring the resolution in the display dialogue got the wider but geometrically correct display as promised.
The only issue is the 2d windows such as the GPS which are distorted, but I usually resized them anyway so what the hey!

I reset the 'wideview' parameter to TRUE in the fsx.cfg file manually but it still needed the resolution set for the required effect.

It has greatly enhanced the sim experience in my opinion.

It certainly enhances the viewing experience, but you will notice a significant frame drop with Autogen set above Normal (as more trees, buildings, etc. must now be drawn for every scene.)

Although I prefer the widescreen aspect ratio, my box doesn't offer me enough performance to use it.

I wonder if the 2D panel background bitmaps could be extended to a widescreen ratio and the panel.cfgs updated to reflect the new gauge positions whether that would help?

I use a 1920x1200 24" widescreen and other than the slight frame rate drop over the 1440x900 I was using before I find it very immersive, but then my parents always did say I sit too close to the screen! The 2D gauges do get stretched but I don't really find it noticeable.

Si

Thanks for the info on autogen. I rarely have this set at all as I use photographic scenery with mainly custom objects set as sparse.
Will experiment when I get round to it :D
