• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

working with Effects

Hi all
I am just starting to work on putting Effects and was wondering if there is a program that I can use to preview the effects that are in flightsim so I can see what they look like . I know they are named and that pretty much says what they are. but I would like to see them if possible.

thanks for any halp.

No one else answered this...so I'll take a stab. I don't know of a program. When testing a particular effect, I set my aircraft up in the proper place to view it, then it is just a matter of closing and re-opening FS to previous flight to view the changes I made in the effect.

Thanks guys for the info. One more question. Do I have to set an attach point up in Gmax before I export the object to put a effect with the object . I made a small Oil pot and tryed to put a smoke effect with it but I cant seem to see it. any thoughts.

First, make sure that their is no exclude that you placed where you are going to place your effect in your scenery....if their is then your effect will not show up.

To attach an effect in Gmax, create a small object...box,cylinder,etc to where you want your effect will be placed. For instance place a small box right above your oil pot. Once that is done use the attachpoint script, it will ask the location where the effect is located which is fs9/effects folder. Once that is done select effect which will then ask you a name and which effect. Just give it any name you like. Then for your effect, scroll down to the effect you want and click. Now if you look at the object you created it should be renamed attachpoint_(the name you placed). Being that you have another object present in gmax, you can now export and edit the xml file and create the bgl.file. Your effect should now show. Like i said, if their is an exclude where the effect is placed, it will not show.

If using Ablitos method does the effect have to be in the fs9/effects folder.

Can they be put into the Add on Scenery/Scenery folder ??

In general, all the effects should be in your fs9/effects folder. Then it is easy to locate and avoid any confusion. You can name the effect whatever you want. When you use gmax and attachpoint script, you have to select the folder where the fs9/ effects folder but if you wanna place it in another folder then just look for the effect there. If you decide to move it AFTER you attached it, im not really sure if will continue to work since i always placed them in the effects folder

Hello,

Dave is right im pretty sure that flight sim only looks in the effets folder for effects if you put the effect in another folder flight sim wont show the effect because flight sim wont look in any folder other than the effects folder.

Hope this help's.

If you don't want to wait up to 2mins each time to re-start your FS try this:

Create a FLT on a small island in the pacific ocean, no weather and no autogen, small aircraft). Place a link to this file on your desktop. Rightclick and choose 'open with...' -> FS, then you can alway startup FS by double-clicking on this icon. You may have to wait 15secs (!) minimum for the FS to startup.

Of course you'll have to place your scenery-files or fx on that little island for testing. ;)

You may even make a complete second installation of FS on your system with minimum settings. I guess you can get the startup-time beneath 10 seconds in the end. :D
