• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

+1

Mixing the two forums/products into one would get very confusing, and would invite a lot of unnecessary Comparisons, and One-up type posts.

Geoff

I beg to differ. My thoughts are this. Many developers are wanting to get their creations that are already in FS9 and FSX, and get them into X-Plane. If we segregate ourselves air-tight, it will be more difficult to pull information into and from our groups. It would make the 'communication factor' more difficult.

Right now, I (for one) would like to know exactly (precisely) how to export a Gmax model plane into X-Plane format. I need to know the pitfalls, issues, every single detail about compiling a Gmax scene into XP9 (and soon, XP10) format(s).

Carenado and perhaps 1 other group are now exporting to XP9 format. I wanted to do this almost 2 years ago, but the information is so tight, that getting into this is massively difficult.

My thoughts are that we, being mostly Gmax and Max based workers on these specialized projects, would benefit on a 'group odyssey', Pardon the pun, in finding out how this is done.

The thing that will be difficult is finding a person or three that would know how this might be done, as well as group efforts on figuring out the XP SDK.

Thats my view on it. My thoughts are to get this tackled so that exporting to XP format is done and a thing of the past. No bickering, no groaning or rock throwing, no childish behavior, just pure, unadulterated 'learning' and figuring out the obstacles.

EDIT: I would like to point out that usually airplane people do not usually interact daily with scenery people. For instance, I being a plane guy, rarely ever see Arno in the plane rooms. He is mostly in the scenery development rooms. Perhaps this would be the occurrence of a XP room as well, only a certain group going in there and interacting, and the rest, nearly forgetting that it is there.

Maybe we could force y'all apart by setting limits on which forums you can see ;):)

AVSIM has had an X-Plane forum for years. I've successfully avoided having to see it by simply collapsing that particular "sub-group" in the forum listings... ;)

Well, if the risk of Flight not being able to support modding comes true I would be very interested in learning about X-Plane. Of course, I would still be doing my stuff for FSX...

Speaking of alternatives, I see that FlightGear 2.4.0 has just been released in the last few days! :stirthepo

Hi,

I have closed this poll now, since we have opened the X-Plane forums. Have a look at this announcement.

For the moment we just made a aircraft and scenery forum. Based on the interest and how discussions are picking up we can split this into more sub-forums later on. But let's first see how it develops.

Hi Mike,

Yes, I have been thinking about that as well. We'll probably add it soon.

Hi Arno,

I was actually just joking! I think a FlightGear forum would attract even less activity than an X-Plane one (nothing instead of next to nothing). Of course I could be proven wrong and it certainly wouldn't be the first time.

My problem with both the alternatives is that they use AC3D for 3D models and I am a now 3ds Max person having moved over from Maya. I just don't feel motivated enough to learn yet another 3D design program or another Flight Simulator for that matter.

Can a FlightGear forum be far away?;)

I like where this is going!

Think "wave of refugees" when Flight! is released...

My laptop mainly ran Ubuntu for the last week. Could be a writing on the wall.

I hope FG sees a bit more activity (under the premise of it being entirely spare-time fueled) in the future.

Sure, like Linux it's a whole different ball game, but in turn, the price tag is more than convincing.
And: You can actually make a difference there by diving a bit deeper into the source code and improving upon the basic features.

I have been looking at the AC3D file format recently and I plan to add it to ModelConverterX soon. It is not such a difficult format to convert to or read from.

Given that a new version of Flightgear has been released I am tempted to install it and have a go at adding some scenery I made before for MSFS. Just for the fun of it :).

Well Arno, if your miraculous and ever so useful ModelConverterX utility adds the capability to convert to the AC3D file format, then I would most definitely be taking another look at FlightGear!

As was mentioned above, the price is right and as a developer of freeware scenery it would represent a better philosophical fit as well.

I really like the possibility to have an update repository in FlightGear.
Want to test new features or WIP models?
Sure, connect to GIT, pull the latest versions and off you go!

Imagine this: The only thing you have to pay for with Linux, FlightGear and Blender is your computer hardware and your internet connection.

Sure, Ubuntu is quite hard for beginners, especially if you need special functionality. I've spent several days trying to get most of the power management features of my laptop to work, but in the end it's oh so ever rewarding!

As for scenery, you'd have a playing field a thousand times larger than MSFS offers, since most airports in the FG world are still quite basic.

You are certainly right about that! I just checked out the FlightGear Canada site that shows what is available for aircraft and scenery in Canada. Just go to: http://www.flightgearcanada.ca/ then click on the picture below the word "Scenery:" and you will see the current state of affairs for FlightGear Canadian scenery!

Guys

I think this is veering way off topic. This is a topic about whether we should have an X-Plane Forum. We now seem to be in amongst the current state of development for FlightGear

If we want to consider adding FlightGear to the list of supported sims (and I am personally open to be persuaded) then perhaps we should address it in another thread :)

i agree with geoff. keep the X-plane separate. So you have visit downloads, visit wiki, visit MFS forums and visit X-plane.

Delivery Guy:eek:

Sorry Jon, I helped it to derail :)

Since we do have an x-plane forum now, I'll close this thread.
