• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi,

I am relatively new to scenery design having only toyed with Airport v3 prior to a couple of weeks ago and am a little confused by the new style of scenery creation. I am slowly working through my tutorials on Gmax however, I am also attempting to create some effects and have a couple of questions.

First of, reading through the Special effect SDK notes, it states I can alter the xml file for effects placement using notepad which, I have done. I can only save it as a txt file though. How do I convert it to an xml file that bglcomp will recognise?

Secondly, how do I make an effect repeat itself, preferably randomly but, if not at alloted times?

Thanks

Sounds like your are hiding your file extensions and in that case notepad has the bad habbit to make everything a text file. You can show your extension by chaning a setting in Explorer. You can find it in the Tools menu and then "Folder options", "View" tab. There is an option there to hide known extensions, remove that check. After that you should be able to change the TXT into XML.

Although BGLComp might also be able to compile a TXT file, as long as the text in it is valid XML.

As far as the repeating effect, what are you try to make as it would be easier to point you in the right direction.

Thanks for the replies,

I am attempting to make flak/explosions however, I have just succesfully made the bgl but, when I try and view it in FS, FS crashes. I get a bleack screen and then it goes back to desktop. I am now confused. I think I have done everything correctly.

Hey Fin,

Im not sure if you solved your problem yet but actually ran into the problem again. Im not sure if it makes a difference but when i used image tool to convert my texture to dxt1 format and create the mipmaps, i created the mipmaps first...then converted to dxt1 format and i had the crashing to desktop. All i did was re-open image tool, changed to dxt1 format then i created the mipmaps like i usually do and the problem went away.

Thanks,

I tried again and for some reason it worked no probs. Don't know what caused it.
