• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Your superior knowledge required - PLEASE!

McFlySky over at flightsim.com suggested I come here................

I downloaded/installed the file "convimx.zip" as recommended in the thread:
http://forums.flightsim.com/vbfs/sho...ht=convimx.zip
The last post indicated some issues that I had but no replies were made.

Yesterday I made some conversions for my BAe146 from BMP to DDS format.
Results are below...................only odd bits now show!
The T-tail is there but invisible - only know it's there because it overlays the scenery!
DDS_texture_01.jpg

When the lights are ON they show:
DDS_texture_02.jpg

Two other aircraft I attempted to convert do not even show any odd bits - they are completely invisible! I only know they are "there" because of a shimmer like a mirage or heat effect in the air when I rotate in Spot View and other/AI aircraft disappear behind and then re-appear when passed

I run TWO PCs. My old/internet PC is used for downloads, e-mail etc.
The new PC is FS only.

Any FS downloads are made TO the old PC, unzipped, copied to a USB stick and then transferred to the new/FSX machine.

For some reason the "convimx" will NOT run on the new PC so all format conversions have been made on the old PC and copied as above.

Both machines are running XP-Home/SP3

Your superior knowledge would be most appreciated.
The default FSX aircraft with DDS textures run at around 8-fps faster than the BMP texture aircraft.

All suggestions and help welcomed.

Hi,

First question is maybe what are you trying to achieve by converting the textures?

Hi Folks

Ken -
Can you also confirm,
did you create this model ?
or is it by somebody else ?

Paul

Paul,
the model is one of Jon Murchison's BAe146-200.

Arno,
I was trying to convert to DDS in the hope of improving fps!
I read on the flightsim web site that all aircraft textures should be in DDS format. I also (then) noted the default aircraft and some of my add-ons are also in DDS.
When flying my VA aircraft I experience a ridiculous drop in fps when using the paints by one of the VA painters. Other members who also paint say they cannot find anything "untoward" in the way this guy does/applies his paint:confused:
The VA paints are all from FS9 - none of the painters use FSX:rolleyes:

When flying the default (DDS) aircraft my fps are on average 8 fps better than those in BMP textures - the paints by that particular VA painter can knock the fps even further down.

This is only an issue when using Spot View - but we all like to take a look outside from time to time:D

I might also add that I tried a different conversion program last evening "DDS_Converter_v2.1" (found after a trawl through Google). This program reckoned on converting all file formats. However, it says it cannot read the files:mad:
Checked the files and they are not write protected and not "read only".

In essence, then, "convimx" converts the files which then don't show up in FSX and "DDS_Con~~" says it can't even read the files:(

It has now become a challenge that I can't give up.
Maybe being as old as I am is just making me cantankerous (like we are supposed to be:eek:).

Hi Folks

Ken -
Nothing superior here, :D
and I'm not a modeler.

Only a guess,
possibly its related to your alpha channel, and DXT1.

There may be some relevant info at -
- FSdeveloper - Wiki - Texture formats overview
- FSdeveloper - Wiki - DXT compression explained

Also worth reading the section about file extensions in -
- FSdeveloper - Wiki - Missing textures

PS
The SDK's ImageTool should provide a better standard conversion.

Paul, thanks for those links - will start reading now.............

Doh!!! just connected.......................

BASys......Barrow in Furness............Doh!!!

Well at least my texture issues started with "one of yours"

Don't go too deep now:rolleyes:

Hi,

I would not change texture extensions, since the model is referring to the other textures. But I would check the BMP files that give trouble. Are they DXT BMP files and do they have mipmaps? That could have an influence on the performance as well. ImageTool can help you with all these actions.

Arno,

the texture files only gave me "BMP" and no reference was made to DXT at all - whatever that is! (I am learning:p)

Before seeing this/your latest post I read the links from Paul........

Paul's first link gave the answer!

The solution was to make the option DXT3 within the conversion to DDS.

I have now made all of the conversions - but have taken the precaution of keeping "Copy_texture_***" within the individual aircraft folders.

So far there appears to be a significant improvement in fps.

I have the system limited to 25 fps and all of the converted files are maintaining the "target".
Previously these aircraft would fluctuate between 25 and 15 - 17:mad:

All appears to be well so I shall try it for a period of time to ensure it continues to run without further challenges.

Thanks for your help.

Ken.
