When we want an object to rotate to the wind, we tweak the source code so that an additional rotation is added depending on the variable that contains the wind direction. But this kind of tweak does not work for parts that have been animated in GMax. This article describes a different way of tweaking the object that does work with animated parts as well.

The technique described here is based on the technique that is used by CAT to condition animations. But in this tutorial we will do much more, instead of the time we will use the wind direction to drive the animation. Let's get started!

= Preparing for the tweak in GMax =

To make the source tweaking a little bit easier, you will have to prepare your object a little bit in GMax. I used a model of a windmill (typical Dutch object) to test this technique. In my GMax object I created an animation of the vanes. This was all done in the normal way.

The next step was to add an additional dummy animation for the rotation of the head of the windmill. It does not really matter what this animation does, as we will tweak it later on. I just added a 90 degrees swing to the head. As the other animations, like the vanes, are linked to the rotation of the head, it might look a bit strange in GMax at the moment. But you don't have to worry about that. Don't forget the tick18_ prefix for this dummy object, else the correct code is not generated in the ASM file.

Once you are ready with your animations you can export the MDL file. Make sure that you keep the ASM source files as well, as you will need these to tweak the animation.

= Tweaking the ASM file =

== The basic idea ==

The basic idea of the tweak we are going to do, is that instead of using the time to determine a frame of the animation table, we are going to use the direction of the wind to do this selection. So the animation table of for example 0 to 100 frames, corresponds with a wind direction between 0 and 360 degrees. To achieve this we will have to change a few things. The first is the animation table itself of course, it must represent a nice rotation between 0 and 360 degrees of the object. But we will also have to change the part of the code that now interpolates the frame number from a timer. This must read the wind direction for us and provide a frame number to use from that.

For your animation it could be different of course, but the structure of the code should be the same. The first screenshot shows a general overview of the array with all IK handles, bones and skinned meshes displayed.

I'll just show the forward array of rails and rods as a demonstration since it's fairly straight forward. The aft array is a bit more complicated because it uses basically two bone chains linked together. Also, the skinned mesh and the door is set to transparent now to help seeing the bones. The only things left non-transparent in the following screenshot are the door hinge located inside the cabin and the rod sticking out of the passenger door (child to the door). Those two elements basically serve as the start and end points for the bone chain.

The blueish elements in the next shot is the bone structure. As suggested in the jetway tutorial video I've created the bones by snapping their ends to various pivot points. This can be accomplished by using a dummy as a disposable pivot point donor (you can delete them once the bones were created) placed at the actual rotating joints of the array. In my case, I did this with real modeled joints. I know now that this is basically a waste of polies, dummies can do the trick equally well. Note that the bone structure does *not* correspond to the actual mesh structure (the "Left" viewport illustrates this pretty well), say a bone isn't necessarily located inside the actual mesh that is used as its skin. This is because I wanted to keep things simple and rather opted for "easy" angles between bones (rectangular or a straight line) to avoid any possible undesired effects. Skinning the bones was achieved with a "skin" modifier; nothing difficult about that since you can assign whole elements (at least in Max 9). In terms of bone hierarchy (done automatically; the first bone is always the parent, the second in line child number one etc...), I started out at the hinge on top (see screenshot 1 and 2) and worked my way down to the rod sticking out of the door.

Once the skinned mesh was assigned it was time to place the IK handles, which are represented by the blue crosses. This was done with Max's "IK Limb Solver". Linking the right bones together required a bit of trial and error, since sometimes the desired effect can be obtained with linking two bones only while you need to link three to four to get the desired result. I find that it's better to work your way from the top of the bone hierarchy to the bottom. So just create a link, move the handle you've just created around a bit with the "Move" tool to see if it provides the anticipated effect and delete and try again or move on to the next bone.
Screenshot number three shows the "Motion" tab of a handle (marked by the move tool) and shows that this one links the upper bone circled in red with the lower one with the red circle. The bone in between those two doesn't need a handle since its movement and rotation proved to be entirely autonomous and without any requirement for my interference.

Just to prove this autonomy I moved the handle a bit along the Z axis (upwards). As you can see, the IK-linked bones and their skin move as expected.

The next problem to resolve was making the lowest bone and thus part of the array move along with the door. It wasn't necessary of course, but way more convenient since it took away the necessity to keyframe this element. This is where the lower rod came into play. Since the whole construction was pretty accurately placed from the start I simply had to link the lowest IK handle to the rod and I was done.

...to this very conveniently with the help of just those two IK handles (the ones selected) and a preanimated (= keyframed) element (the door).

It should make doing the *real* animations fairly easy.

The railing array of the other side of the door works exactly like the one on this side with the exception of featuring two of these systems (see the first screenshot). The lower one once again runs from the hinge to the rod in the door, the parent bone of the upper system (for the handrail) is linked to a bone of the lower system while the handle at the end bone is once again linked to that rod.
And again, all I need is two handles to arrange everything in the desired fashion.

Instead, try to '''keyframe''' every bone.
This can be done with collapse transformation. Select one bone at a time and then select to the "Motion" tab (right hand side of the UI), then "Trajectories". If the bone actually follows a path, the movement trajectory will be displayed in the viewport (at least in 3DS Max 9). Then specify the keyframe range in the "Sample Range" box, where 10 "samples" give you a keyframe every 10 keys (in a range of 100 keyframes). Finally, check that "Position" and "Rotation" are ticked and hit "Collapse". Your bone should now have a range of keyframes assigned.

This should be done with every moving bone in the whole array. When every linked bone has been keyframed, the IK handles used in the array can be deleted.
Further tweaking might be needed before tagging '''all''' keyframed bones with the Animation Manager and exporting.
Remember to have "Export Skin" checked when using the "Export LOD" tool.

Alpha channel creation with Photoshop

==Introduction==

In this article I will describe how transparant textures for Flight Simulator can be made by using PhotoShop and ImageTool. If you use another graphical program, like Paint Shop Pro, the technique described in this article is still valid of course, but the names and locations of the different functions used might be different. Let's get started!

==Base texture==

The first step is to make the normal texture. The steps how to do this will not be discussed here, I assume you know how to make your own textures, based on photos for example.

In the figure below you will see the texture I am going to use for this tutorial. It is part of the Texel scenery I made and as you can see it contains three parts. The upper two are texture for a wall, each with transparant windows in it. The lower parts is a sign of the restaurant and the part that is shown in red here should become transparant in the end. In some older tools like BMP2000 the transparancy was linked to a certain color, that is not the case here. The only reason I made that part of the texture red is that it allowed me to select it easier later on, I could just as well have made it white to get the transparancy.

==Adding the alpha channel==

The next step is to add the alpha channel to the texture in PhotoShop. Normally PS will show the different layers that are available in your image, but in that same windows you can also select the tab channels to show the different channels that are available. In the figure below these two tabs are shown for our texture.

As you can see the texture has one layer, but it has four channels. There are the R(ed), G(reen) and B(lue) channels and also the RGB channels where all color are mixed correctly.

We need to create a new channel in the image, our alpha channel. To do this click on the [[Image:alpha4.jpg]] button at the bottom of the channel window. The new channel will automatically be called alpha channel.

==Using the alpha channel==

As you can see in the figure above the alpha channel is completely black by default. What does that mean?

With the color in the alpha channel you can determine the level of transparancy for each pixel of the image. In Flight Simulator there are two different texture formats, the DXT1 and DXT3 texture. The DXT1 texture has a 1-bit alpha channel, while the DXT3 texture has a 4-bit alpha channel.

This means the DXT1 alpha channel can only contain 2 color, black and white. All parts that have a black color in the alpha channel will become fully transparant, while all parts with a white color in the alpha channel will show as normal. This format can thus not be used to make parts semi-transparant.

In a DXT3 texture you can use up to 16 colors in the alpha channel, so you can also use different tones of grey. These tones of grey allow you to set parts as semi-transparant. The darker the grey color is, the more transparant it will become. Due to the larger size of the alpha channel, the size of the total texture is also bigger in the DXT3 format, so only use this format if you really need semi-transparancy.

==Drawing the alpha channel==

If you select the alpha channel in the channel window, you will see that the normal window of your texture also shows the alpha channel instead of the normal RGB channel. Now you can use the normal drawing tools to manipulate the alpha channel.

If you select both the RGB and the alpha channel in the channel window, so will notice that you see the alpha channel as red blended over the normal texture. This allows you to see if the alpha channel matches find with your texture. By selecting the RGB channel for example you can select a part of the normal texture as shown in the figure below.

By switching to the alpha channel next, it is very easy to fill a part of the alpha channel, that exactly matches the normal texture, with a certain color. In this case I made everything in the alpha channel white, by simply inverting the selection and filling it with a white color. Only the parts there are red in the orgional texture are left black, as these should become fully transparant (see the figure below).

Now let's turn back to the texture of this example. We had two walls and the sign. The two walls each have a stone part that should not become transparant of course, so these parts need to be white in the alpha channel. The glass parts of the walls should be semi transparant, so we need to use a grey tone there. For the sign we should make everything that is part of the sign white. All other parts of the texture must be fully transparant and thus black in the alpha channel.

When this all has been done the alpha channel should look something like the one showed in the figure below.

==Saving the texture==

Now we are ready with the texture in PhotoShop and there is one step left to be done. The texture must be saved in a format the ImageTool can read, but that can also store the alpha channel. The PSD format of PhotoShop is one of these formats, so we will save the texture in that format. Other options are the TGA format or 32 bit bitmaps.

==Saving as DXT texture with ImageTool==

The last step before we can use our texture is to save it as a DXT texture with ImageTool. You need to take the following steps in ImageTool:

* Open the texture. Load the image that you saved from PhotoShop here. The figure below shows how it should look. The colors do not show correct, everything looks a bit too dark, but that is correct.

* Select the correct format for your texture. Using Image -> Format -> DXT3 you can set the texture to DXT1 or DXT3 (see the figure below). In this case we want the format to be DXT3. Once you have set the format you will see that the colors of the texture also become correct.

* The next step is to add the mipmaps to the texture. This can be done using the Image -> Create MipMaps (see the figure below). You will see that the small versions of your texture are shown as well.

* The last step is to save the texture to the correct texture folder in Flight Simulator. You can do this using the File menu.

To check if the alpha channel is correct you can use View -> Alpha channel in ImageTool. This will show the alpha channel of the current image. The figure below shows that are alpha channel is correct. It has also been added nicely to the mipmaps.

This tutorial describes how you can get a background image properly aligned in your 3D editor, like GMax. By having it aligned properly you can use it to trace aprons and taxiways or to position your objects correctly. So let's get started!

== Getting the image ==

The first step obviously is to get your background image. I can not tell you where to get them for your airport or country, there are just too many differences per county. But I can tell you what kind of background image you need.

Most import is that you get an image in geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude WGS84). This is the same requirement as for images used in resample to make photorealistic terrain scenery. So if you image is in another projection, you first need to reproject it. Most GIS applications can do this for you. Look at [[GeoTIFF_file_creation_with_FwTools|this tutorial]] if you want to use FWTools for it.

Another constraint is that you don't want a very high resolution image. If you have a 10000x10000 pixel image your 3D editor will most like not be able to work efficiently with it. So a slightly lower resolution is not that bad.

The image on the right shows an example background image for the airport Drachten in the Netherlands. You can see there are some back edges on the image, that is because I had to reproject it from the local Dutch projection to WGS84. I will use this image in the rest of the tutorial.

== Calculating position ==

In your 3D editor you are working in flat earth coordinates, so to be able to position the image correctly we need to convert the know latitude and longitude of the borders of the image to XY coordinates in flat earth. The [[Conversion_between_geographic_and_FS_XY_coordinates|forumulas]] to do this conversion are well known. So you can do the math with a simple calculator or with Excel. In this case I will be using the [[ModelConverterX]] tool since it has a nice function build in for this.

So the first step is to know the latitude and longitude of your image. Maybe this information was provided together with the image or if it is a GeoTIFF image you can extract it [[GeoTIFF_file_creation_with_FwTools|using FWTools]].

For the image of Drachten the coordinates are:

As you see I did not only get the latitude and longitude of the edges, but also of the centre of the image. That's because I will be using the centre as my reference point and origin in the 3D editor.

So now the next step is to calculate the XY coordinates of the top-left, top-right, bottom-left and bottom-right corner of the image. Like I mentioned before there are formulas to do so, but I will be used the Coordinate Converter tool within ModelConverterX (see image to the right).

In this tool you enter your reference point latitude and longitude, so in our case the centre of the image. And then the latitude and longitude of a second location. As a result you get the XY coordinates. So we need to repeat that for every corner. The resulting coordinates then are:

So now we have all information we need to go to our 3D editor.

== Inserting the image ==

Now that we have all the information you can put the background image into your 3D editor. I will be using GMax in this tutorial, but it should work (almost) the same for SketchUp, FSDS or 3DS Max.

The first step is to draw a rectangle, for that you can use the plane primitive in GMax. Make sure to give it only 1 segment. Draw it roughly to the size of your image. Then you will move the four vertices of the rectangle to the positions we have calculated before. The image to the right shows the resulting plane.

Now we are almost done, the last step is to add your background image as a texture to this rectangle. Make sure that the texture is mapped so that it covers the entire rectangle. If you editor has an option to freeze the rectangle you better use it now, that will prevent that you accidentally move or edit your background image later on.

Now you are ready to start using your background image!

== A word on FSX ==

If you are modelling for FSX there is one more thing you need to be aware of. FSX does not use the flat earth coordinates that we used the formulas of, as FS2004 does. If you look in the screenshot of the Coordinate Converter you see that below the flat earth coordinates there are also geocentric coordinates given. This is the coordinate system used by FSX, since it has a curved earth in it.

You have two options now:

# Continue modelling in the FS2004 coordinates and later correct for the difference. The Ground Polygon Wizard of ModelConverterX does this for example. It will assume you input is in FS2004 flat earth coordinates and it will correct for the curve of the earth.
# Use the geocentric coordinates as given by the Coordinate Converter to position your rectangle. If you are only modelling for FSX that should also work fine. But don't use the Ground Polygon Wizard in that case, as it assumes input in flat earth.

If you want to build an aircraft, you need a plan of that aircraft.
If you want to make a building, where can you get the plan of the buildings?
Probably not, just the photo outside is enough. You know the shape of the building by the photo and satellite photo.
However, it is difficult to know how tall it is.
I have a tutorial to make a template to those buildings in the airport. Hangars, terminals, towers or any buildings in the airports need to be proportion to each others. If you guess the height, it might come up with something disproportion to other buildings.

This is an example for you. I am making a cargo hangar in Kaula Lumpur Airport.

If you looking at this picture below, it is from Airliner.net (I think, can't remember exactly). This kind of photo is available anywhere. The photographer wanted to take a picture of that airplane.

Try it, you will love it. Any template you made can be use for many buildings in the scene. Just resize the template plane to fit the area of the building on satellite photos.

There's no need to screw around with tubes people, and the "clone and downscale" method sucks because you have to indeed "plug the holes." Besides, downscaling will not give you constant thickness... and a host of other problems.

- Build the fuselage.

- Convert to editable mesh, clone the fuselage, select all polygons and extrude them inwards (negative value) along their normals (tick 'Local').

- Select all polygons and hit 'Flip'.

- Attach the new "inner hull" to the fuselage, select all vertices, set weld threshold to 0.001m and hit 'Weld Selected.'

AgnTools is the combined name for two autogen related tools: agn2txt and txt2agn. The first is a decompiler to turn FSX AGN files into a readable TXT file. The second is the compiler to do the reverse step. This allows developers to make small changes to their AGN, without using the Annotator tool from the SDK.

== Introduction ==

It's been a while since I wrote my last tutorial here and for the last couple of months I said to myself: you REALLY have to write some more tutorials but I never found time. Yesterday I received a really nice thank-you-message from one of the developers who appreciated the tutorial on how-to-build-a-instrument-background-from-scratch[http://www.aerodynamika.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1250053516]. Reason enough to recap a couple of new techniques which I developed over the last years and share the thoughts with you.

In this tutorial I try to explain a couple of steps that hopefully will enhance the overall look of all your textures. The methods described can be used for basically every part of your model. I am using an old photoshop version for my project, but most of the steps can be done in almost any other image processing tool.

I chose an 1930th headset of my Electra as an example. It's not a model that is particularly well done, but it's a good example for what I want to show you because it consists of many different materials and yet is a small and simple part. I won't go into the details of modelling here as the focus is on the work in photoshop.

== Step 1 - gettin' started ==

What you always should start with is a blank texture, and for this part I am using a 512x512 pixel image. You will need a 'mesh' layer - by that I mean a representation of the UV mapping. If you are using Gmax, you can follow Bill L. advice and create this layer using lilithunwrap, I still do this manually by taking screenshots of the uv unwrap window in gmax and paste, mask and rescale it in photoshop. To make the layer more visible I usually add a background layer with some color, that also shows you empty sections of your texture for later. To help you identify the different parts I imposed a description layer to the screenshot.

== Step 2 - the base ==

Let's give the parts some color! Select one area at the time and fill it with an appropriate color. At this stage it's not important to exactly match what you intend to do, it's more like a rough sketch. It can be beneficial to have ONE layer for each part you are working on, but that's up to you.

Note that I also added two dark lines and a dotted white line at the place of the leather headband. That'll be the stitching later on. I always like to apply a slight noise filter on these layers. It'll give you some basic structure.

== Step 3 - the first magic trick ==

A really, really, REALLY nice trick is to add white lines along the hard contours of your 3d part. This will improve all your textures 10 fold! There are a couple of ways to do this. For instance you can paint some highlights manually - but it's very likely that you can't paint a straight line by hand (coffee and or beer consumption I suppose), therefore I recommend you use paths.
If you haven't used paths before STOP RIGHT HERE! Paths are such a great tool in photoshop and you need to get your head around it! It'll help you draw these freakin' panel lines and rivets, differently colored sections on the fuselage, scratches aaaaaaaand these beautiful white lines we are making now.

What we want to achieve in step 4 are these highlighted edges for all sharp objects. That is one of the reasons why we need a very precise "mesh layer" - you need to know were these edges are in order to draw the lines. Lets get started and draw some paths along the edged of the mesh.

Remember that you want to have a path around every visible edge. The Ctrl-, Shift- and space keys are your friend, use them constantly, it'll save you a looooot of time!
Once you finished that it'll look like this:

One of the good things about paths is of course that you can always come back and modify your lines if you're missing some edges or if you had drawn a line were there shouldn't be one. But for now it's OK and the obvious step is to get the highlights drawn. So create a new layer, deselect the last path you were working on (otherwise only this path gets stroked), Select a 1 px brush, white as foreground-brush-color and click on the little "stroke path".

You can hide the path afterwards by pressing Ctrl+Shift+h. In the following picture I also hid the mesh layer to show the result.

Here comes the next secret: make good use of the layer-blending-modes!

Blending modes are brilliant for merging two or more different graphics into one while reserving all details you want. Let's apply this new knowledge to our edges. Select the white-edge-layer and set the blending mode to "Soft Light".

You can (and should!) improve the look of the edges by various means. I like to apply Gauss filters with different settings a couple of times to smooth the transition, I also like to give the edges some detail by applying my most beloved Noise-filter. You can also change the highlight by using a soft eraser tool to decrease the effect for the matte materials (leather, plastic, etc). I don't want to go into detail about that here so let's leave it and just move on.

== Step 4 - the dark side! ==

Assuming you work with low-tech modelling programs like Gmax, you don't have the chance of "baking" a shadow layer to your texture. Therefore, in order to give your part some depth you have to draw the shadows manually. This can be a very tedious work if you want it to look right. For now we just create a rough draft.

Create a new layer and set the blending mode to "Hard Light". Take a smooth brush, set the opacity to about 20-30% and start drawing the shadows wherever you feel like it. Eventually you'll end up with something like this:

Again, you can further improve the looks by applying a noise filter.

Adding realism to airports

Using an airport editor such as ADE in association with the SDK tools, it is a relatively simple task to modify a stock airport so that it more closely resembles its real-world counterpart by adding parking and aprons – or even to create a new airport from scratch. But, the result often won’t look much like the real thing when taxiing about in the user aircraft.

This tutorial discusses a number of techniques for overcoming these issues and for otherwise
adding realism to your MFS airport. As well, it suggests some methods for coping with the way
MFS handles transitions from one surface material to another and other drawing-order issues.
In writing this tutorial, I have assumed the reader is familiar with the terminology, concepts and
fundamental elements involved in airport design for MFS.

First make sure that your file is appropriate for inclusion in the FSDeveloper download section. We only host files that are of interest to developers. So if you want to share a tool or some objects for others to use in their scenery, please upload them. But if you want to share your finished aircraft or scenery, please go to one of the general FS websites.

So you still want to upload your file? Great, here is what you need to do:

# In the downloads section click on the [http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/downloads.php?do=add&cat= Add] link
# Fill in all the information, please provide a good description about your file as well.
# Select the right category for your file.
# Browse to the file on your harddisk using the Browse button.
# Click Add file, this will start the upload process. This might take some time depending on the size of your file.

This document describes the ActiGate module for Flight Simulator. It could be that you have downloaded the module yourself, but you can also have received it as a part of a scenery you downloaded.

This modules makes extra variables available to scenery designers, which they can use to make their scenery more interactive. If you do not have a scenery that makes use of these extra variables, you will not see any changes to your current scenery. This module itself does not provide new scenery or so!

Among the variables that ActiGate offers to the scenery designer are the type of aircraft you are flying, if you have set the parking brake and if it is raining or snowing at the moment. All these variables can normally not be read by the scenery. But it is the choice of the designer which of these variables he uses, so your scenery might not use all of them.

== Installation ==

To install the ActiGate module just unzip the ZIP file you downloaded to the modules folder of Flight Simulator. Please note that the module could also have been installed by a scenery you are using. In that case you don't need to worry about the installtion.

Once the module has been installed it will run automatically when Flight Simulator is running. You do not have to enable it manually or somethink like that. If you have trouble, please have a look at the FAQ below.

=== The module is not working ===

Please be aware that the module alone does not provide you with any special features. It only writes some variables that sceneries can use, but you will not see any changes to your current scenery.

If the scenery you are using does not respond to as you expect, please contact the author of the scenery first to make sure it should respond as you expect.

=== Flight Simulator crashes since I installed the ActiGate module ===

One of the beta testers reported a crash of Flight Simulator due to the desktop. It crash seemed caused by the combination of the ActiGate module and a PMDG aircraft he had installed. Unfortunately we could not find cause this crash. If you have similar trouble, just remove the ActiGate DLL. This should make your Flight Simulator working again. After that, please contact me, I can need any information to solve problems like this.

=== I do get conflicts with other scenery/tools ===

If the scenery user variables written by ActiGate interfere with some other scenery or tool using the same variables, you can temporarily disable ActiGate. This is done by clicking on the Modules menu in Flight Simulator. You will see an entry for ActiGate there. If there is a check mark in front of the name ActiGate is running. If you now click on the ActiGate entry it will be disabled. Once you click on it again ActiGate will be running again. The images below illustrate this.

=== What if my aircraft is not recognised? ===

The scenery you are using could not have been designed to interact with the aircraft type you are using. Please look at the documentation of the scenery or ask the author to be sure this aircraft type should be supported.

If the scenery you are using does support the aircraft type you are using, but it is still not recognised it could be that the aircraft type is not written clearly in the ''aircraft.cfg'' file. In that case the ActiGate module can not determine the type from the information it reads.

But this problem can be solved. Any aircraft that can not be recognised by the ActiGate module, will be written in a file called ''actigate.ini'' in your Flight Simulator modules folder. If you specify the correct aircraft type in that file, you aircraft will be recognised from now on. To help you editing this file I have made a little editor, ''ActiGateEditor.exe''. You can also find this file in your modules folder.

When you start this editor you will get a screen as shown below (of course the aircraft shown will be different on your PC). If you now click on any of these aircraft, you can use the dropdown box to select the correct type. Once you press ''Save and Exit'' your changes are stored and the next time you start Flight Simulator you aircraft should be recognised correctly.

If you think the aircraft name as shown in the INI file clearly shows the aircraft type, please contact me. If you sent me the aircraft name as shown in the INI file, I can improve ActiGate further.

== Introduction ==

This is the SDK that explains how you can use the functionality provided by the ActiGate module in your scenery. This document is only for scenery designers, it is of no use for normal users of Flight Simulator.

In the remainder of this document it will be explained what kind of functionality the ActiGate module provides and how you can make use of it in your scenery.

== How the module works ==

Before explaining which variables are available and how they can be used, it is also important to explain the basics of how the module works. The ActiGate module makes use of FSUIPC to read parts of the memory that can normally not be read by the scenery. This information is then used to set the scenery user variables to a certain value.

So this means that you (and the user of the scenery) need to have FSUIPC installed in your Flight Simulator, else the ActiGate module will not be able to read the information it is looking for. The ActiGate has a freeware key, so you can also use it with the freeware version of FSUIPC.

As the information is then written into the user variables, this means conflicts can occur when the same user variables are also used by other programs or scenery. The ActiGate module uses the user variables 4 and 5 (usrvr4 and usrvr5), so you should not use these in other places as well. The module also has the option to be disable from the Flight Simulator modules menu, so this can be used to prevent conflicts with other scenery or tools.

== Available variables ==

The ActiGate modules writes data to the user variables 4 and 5. This section explains which data is written.

In user variable 4 (usrvr4) the type of aircraft used at the moment is written. The ActiGate module uses the name string as defined in the <code>aircraft.cfg</code> file. Below is a list of all types that can be recognised and the value that is written to user variable 4 in that case.

The different subtypes of a certain aircraft have been grouped in such a way that you don't have to use them. For example if you just want to check if the user aircraft is any 737, you could check if the value is between 27 and 35.

In user variable 5 (usrvr5) a number of different conditions have been combined. All these condition have the state of being either true or false. If multiple of them are true, there values are added together. The available values are:

To give a few examples of how this work. If it is a Friday and you have the parking brake set at the moment, usrvr5 will have a value of 129. If it is a rainy Monday usrvr5 will have the value of 10. See the example below to see how you can check for these conditions.

If you want to check if the aircraft the user is using at the moment is a Boeing 737, you need to check if the value of the user variable 4 is between 27 and 35. In BGLC code this check can be done with the following code:

The FSX SDK QMID & LOD tables are inaccurate and can prove to be problematic when using resample.exe on source data that has been generated with the SDK values. Due to the rounding of the SDK values this can leave gaps one pixel wide in adjacent blocks of data.

While the tables currently need updating the tests so far have proved problematic.
