• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

    Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

    By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

BA Swallow 2

This model is finally(!) approaching complete after a year of development - probably a week away if beta testing goes OK.

This is the FS2004 version - there will also be a Native FSX version with bump and spec maps to follow very shortly.

The reason it has taken so long (apart from lack of time) - it is my first attempt at doing the complete package - full model, 2d panel, VC, flight dynamics.

This is also the first complete FS2004 model built entirely using 3D Canvas Pro (http://www.amabilis.com) with it's standard .X export and MakeMDL
(The Native FSX Export is an extra plugin)

The VC has also had the 4mm welding bug corrected

History
~~~~~
This British light aircraft of the 1930s was a revised version of the British Klemm (BK) Swallow 1, itself a licence built copy of the German Klemm L-25.
In 1935 the Swallow II was introduced, with the curved wing tips, rudder and tailplane inherited from the Klemm L.25 original being made straight and with revised fuselage top decking.
At this time the company changed its name to the British Aircraft Manufacturing Co., so the revised version was known as the B.A Swallow II.
Swallow IIs were produced powered either by the Pobjoy Cataract or the Cirrus Minor inline engine, production continuing until 1938, with a total of 107 Swallow IIs produced.
17 aircraft survived the second world war, only a handful remain flying today.
Not to mention writing and testing the freaking FS exporters to the modelling program!!!
Very nice looking model..
And that Pobjoy is just begging to be stolen and popped into a host of other models!!!
Doh - I forgot a few other things :) - I also wrote an FSX MDL file viewer, built 30 ish scenery items for an FSX RAF Bombing range scenery
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=22896
I also spent a few months making scenery items for Rail Simulator and wrote another modelling tutorial:
So the next one should be much quicker :)
This is the start of a licence built Aeronka engine - a JAP (it's been corrected since this screenshot)
Not wanting to take any credit away from Paul on the herculean task of creating a first flyable model, he didn't mention that the early development of the model was in conjunction with myself.
Threads on the UKTrainsim forum illustrate the steps we made during the early stages of the build...
The plane itself...
and the engine...
Instead of "stealing" the engine, I'm sure I could come to some amicable agreement to allow anyone to use the engine in another plane....you just need to ask.
Doug Kightley
You really have to know Felix to understand his (and my) warped sense of humor (humour for the humor impaired)... :rotfl:
Sorry Doug, I really should have mentioned your involvement with the engine and undercarriage too. You are listed as co-author in the config file and readme.
I should also mention that, because this was a learning process for me, I have a lot of help from several forums.
Here are most of the list of people who have been so kind with help and advice:
Doug Kightley for engine, u/c and huge help with the tutorials over on UKTrainsim.com
Leif Harding (www.classicbritishfiles.com) for general flight sim ettiquete and the fact that he was the only one of the "team" that had ever been in a Swallow.
Keith Paine for the flight dynamics - at least I now know what a coefficient of moment is now, and the research we did on the lift from the gottenburg 387/388 airfoil sections.
Peter Watkins has kindly provided 3 of the 6 liveries that will be in the final version.
Felix, for getting me registered over on the FFDS forum and the people there for the 4mm VC welding bug fix.
Arno for all the help in the wiki on this site.
As well as numerous beta testers, reporting back this weekend.
It is a real team effort.
