• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Large object disappearing too soon

Hi,

I have a large FSX mdl object (about 800m long) that I've placed in my scenery without any problem. However when moving towards the edge of the object, in certain circumstances it disappears before it's moved out of the FS view.

I'm guessing it's something to do with the size of the bounding box (?) but don't know if I can increase this or whether I need to do something else to fix the issue.

Cheers

Phil

Hi,

I have seen this before as well. Where is the origin of your object? Is it in the middle of the object or not?

Hi Arno,

The refpoint is in the centre. I loaded the mdl into modelconverterx to take a look at the bounding box. There are three different bounding boxes (one around each "object" in the gmax model) but all parts of the object are within the bounding boxes.

Cheers

Phil

Hi Phil,

In the end the MDL file gets one big bounding box. That one is also nicely centered?

Large objects will often disappear to early as they approach the edge of the field of view, or the ref-point is not visible.

The solution is to place single triangles underground (ie below the 0 Z-reference plane) in Gmax) beyond the corners of the object

Usually 4 triangles extending the "virtual corners" of the bounding box outwards. They do not have to be continuous with the edge of the mesh.

This will stop the object disappearing when you are close to the edge.

There looks to be 3 separate bounding boxes, I've attached a screenshot from modelconverterx.

The solution is to place single triangles underground (ie below the 0 Z-reference plane) in Gmax) beyond the corners of the object.

That sounds like a good solution. I'll give it a try later today, thanks.

Phil

Odd to have 3 bounding boxes ... even with LOD's. Does the object have LODs?

ModelConverterX shows the bounding box per modelpart as well (although it seems in this case the overal bounding box is missing). If you look in the Object Information form you will see the information of the total bounding box.

No, just the one LOD.

There is just one object, the 3 bounding boxes match the polys that are textured with different bitmaps (3 bitmaps used). The info for the bounding box in Object Information matches up with the size of the overall object.

That's a great tip thanks for that! I get this happening from time to time also.

Would this apply to FS9 as well ? if so could you please explain your method of solving this a little more as very new to Gmax.I have some pictures show a very similar thing happening to a model I'm working on,left, front and right view.

Yes, it could work for FS2004 as well.
