• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

FSXA Shading problem with Horizontal Tail

I am having this problem of aircraft's tail having lighting render problems.

Here is a comparison of the three pictures from 3Ds max, Model Converter X and with in Prepar3d v2.2

In this picture you can see how light is affecting the horizontal tail. I have added different smoothing groups to the upper and lower portion of the Horizontal tail but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated;

compare it to the Main wing for more reference of what I want to do with the horizontal tail.
 
Do you mean the shading of the trailing edge poly(s)? That's usually due to the upper and lower side sharing a smoothing group, they should be different (you say they are but better check again, also momentarily clear the smoothing on the side edges, they might also have an impact).

In other words, have one SG for the upper, and one for the lower polys, and use a joint SG where upper and lower meet at the leading edge. Most likely use yet another SG for the side polys.

I tried that, I even have one for the edge... But the problem doesn't seem to go away.

Look a bit closer. The awkward shading is on the elevator, not the horizontal tail. Do the polys on each end of the elevators have the same smoothing group as the upper or lower surfaces? That will screw up the shading.

Even if it is on the elevator, it is a separate part anyway, so it won't affect the shading on the vertical tail. Different smoothing groups for UPPER/LOWER/LEADING EDGE/TRAILING EDGE. Same way for the elevator.

That is something I was thinking about trying! Maybe just different SGs for faces is not the solution.
 
3ds Max doesn't show smoothing problems in the viewport the way Gmax does - which surprised me - so I wouldn't rule out SG errors just yet. Use Select by SG to see which smoothing groups are assigned to which polys. You may yet find the problem...

edit: actually Max does show smoothing errors, I had forgotten about the 6mm thick trailing edge on my wing which greatly reduces their appearance.

Cleared all smoothing groups, then re-assigned still the faces have this weird shade. Going to re-make the horizontal tail today.

However, I tried exporting single sided face with and without smoothing groups applied and the results are the same with both ways... have a look:

problem solved...

Solution: Attached and then de-attached with the main wing and now the horizontal stab has the normal shading!

Ah! Might be a mapping/material problem. Glad you got it sorted, she's a beautiful model!
 
Make sure your mapping number is assigned correctly.
Make sure you have all poly's welded.
Make sure you have used the smoothing effect on the entire part.

When you attached and de attached you might have changed the mapping number to the correct one.
