• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

3Ds max 2016 and the SDK basics

Hello, I just bought a copy of full 3DS max. I am an experienced 3D modeller but have never made a sim capable aircraft before.

So the starting point was - http://www.prepar3d.com/SDK/Environment Kit/Modeling SDK/new aircraft procedures.html#Getting Started on a New Aircraft

Immediately I am up to an issue. The materials mentioned at the beginning do not show up in 3DSmax 2016. therefore I want to know if there is a link to a tutorial to show how to "link" the SDK which I installed to 3DS max?

There is a dearth of video tutorials out there.. no problem with Blender to FSX for instance.

The P3Dv3.2 SDK will be needed, as it contains the export module(s) necessary for Max2016, namely Max2016_FSModelExp_x64.dle, Max2016_MaxUtils_x64.gup, and Max2016_MaxXML_x64.gup...

Paul Domingue solved it. The step to run the script is missing from the instructions on the official SDK site. Thanks for everyone's help. The V3 SDK does connect to 3Ds max 2016

Great! Just for the sake of information, if you are compiling an aircraft for FSX, FSX:SE use the XtoMDL.exe from the P3Dv1 SDK (or FSX SDK). If you are going to compile for P3Dv2 or v3, use the XtoMDL.exe from the P3Dv3.2 SDK.

Bill, where are you finding this? I just installed the latest SDK v3.2.3.16769, because of your post here, with the intention of updating my personal knowledge base. I can not find any reference to Max2016. FSModelExp, MaxUtils and MaxXML are only showing for Max2015. I know that you have access to newer beta versions when they are available, is this the case or am I missing something?

@n4gix your silence is conspicuous. Is this an example of LLSS?
No, shock really. I've just downloaded the very latest SDK and... it won't even install! It keeps giving an error message "SDK must be installed on a local drive"...

I don't think it's possible to get "more local" than C:\DATA\P3Dv3.2.3_SDK :yikes:

In any case, I could have sworn that I saw support for Max2016 in the latest SDK...

On first glance I think the folder name "DATA" might be the problem.

Paul, it won't even work with the bloody "DEFAULT" path, much less something as simple as C:\ which IS the root, local system drive!
I have all my FS related software on my D: drive. For everything LM it's D:/Program files (x86)/Lockheed Martin/P3D SDK v3.2 etc. the full version number. The SDK installed without a hitch with administration privileges. Is it possible you got a corrupted download?
