• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

i'm brand new to all this and wasn't quite sure where to post this but..... I just got 3ds max 9 and can't get the .mdl files to load. is there a plugin, tutorial, anything that can get me going? thanks fellas.

You cannot "load" .mdl files into Max.

.mdl files are what you export from Max...

Not to mention that taking someone else's model and altering it is probably about the lowest thing you can do...

OK, great guys. Thanks for that helpful input. Glad to see that you guys are willing to help out someone else. I'll get in touch with my congressman. Screw the terrorists, we need to get someone after these people who alter models, since that is about the lowest thing you can do. Good call kdryan.

Keep it nice please.

The SDK contains tools to export models in the FS specific format. But it does not contain tools to import them. So if you want to alter an existing model you would need the original source files (in other words, you probably designed it yourself).

My intent was to look at some models to see how other people did it so that I could make some of my own in the future. Like I said, I have no idea how to do any modeling and just thought that it would be fun. Arno, what advice would you give someone who wants to learn?

In that case there are sample models available at http://freeflightdesign.com which you can study. There's also the DC3 model available in Max with the FSX SDK, and for GMax at Freeflight Design.

Download and view every tutorial you can find, then do LOTS of practice! Youtube is a great source of info, as are sites like tutorialized.com, Turbosquid.com and boards like this one. It's not something you're going to learn overnight, so be patient. ;)

You can also download free models from Turbosquid to check out...

Be aware though that the models from Turbosquid are not designed for nor rigged for FS use. They are good to look at for modeling ideas though...

That is why I suggested Freeflight Design. The models there are designed and rigged for use in FS. :D

Agreed. ;) It's amazing what some of those guys can do though...

Modeling Help

I guess I'm having some trouble understanding how this all works too. I've made an airplane model in 3DS, and would like to get it into FSX. I guess there's a tutorial in the SDK somewhere, but I can't find anything. Can anyone help me?

Slug, porting the plane into FS is actually something you won't be doing until late in the game. After modeling is done, you have to texture it, animate it, do a 2d panel, VC, come up with sounds, do a .air file...

I wouldn't worry about FS right now; just get yourself well grounded (no pun intended) in 3d first and it'll make the second plane much easier than the first.

I don't agree with that approach. I think it's quite important to export early and often. It's far better to identify a probem long before the model is completed.

In fact, I recommend exporting a simple BOX model to FSX just to make sure everything is working properly.

Thanks for the insight, I guess there is a lot of work to be done. I already have it textured, and I wouldn't mind going through the work to get it rigged and animated and whatever else. I'd just like to know if there is some tutorial for doing all of this and where I could find it. I've looked through the SDK and haven't found anything. Could anyone guide me further with this?

Once again, I bow to your superior wisdom... ;)
