• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

3dsMax 2022 Render to texture

Hi all,

after switching from Max2017 to Max2022 I have a question concering the render to texture (ambient occlusion baking):
With Mental Ray in 2017 it was easy and -above all- quick to render the ambient occlusion for an object.
In 2022, Mental Ray is not existing any more and instead of a quick rendering for the ambient occlusion it takes forever to get the same results. (probably the same is already for existing in 2021)

Is there any quick way to render the AO?
Help is greatly appreciated as all web research did not bring any suggestions for me...

Thank you!

I used Scanline Render.
Works well and pretty fast if you uptick the Super-sampling option.

You can do it that way, but the result won't be the same as what mental ray's AO was capable of, especially for interiors. The max distance setting within the AO material allowed "rays" to be terminated at a certain distance from the surface, allowing you to basically control the overall "spread" of the effect. Small distance = finer details will be more visible, but surfaces that are further apart will not influence one another as much. Larger distance takes more geometry into account but of course takes longer to render. Using scanline skylights or any other global illumination engine will assume infinite ray travel and anything that is completely enclosed will render pure black.

Unfortunately it appears that there isn't any other renderer built into Max that will give a comparable effect to the legacy AO bakes with mental ray. The closest thing I've found is the "VrayDirt" material which has very similar settings and renders extremely quickly (although Vray costs a fortune unless you pay by the month and be really strategic about it.) I'm sure there are free rendering plugins out there somewhere that can get close to the desired effect though.

Check the SDK for ambient occlusion and follow the steps described to render a lightmap instead of using ao.
Heaps better results in FS.
