• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

I've been working on a contract project to develop a 2d panel and gauge system for a fellow who owns a real AA-5 Hyper Cheetah*. Since all I have to work from are some really hi-res photos of his real a/c's panel, I decided to take a whack at designing his panel in Max9, and taking advantage of the rendering system to generate the 2d bitmap(s) I'll need.

Here is the latest WIP of the AA-5 Hyper Cheetah 3d panel. I've decided to simply update this image rather than continue a long series of images.

Nice looking panel Bill!

Love that glass panel in there.

That's the Aspen Avionics EFD1000 unit. It is designed to fit into existing 3.125" panel holes without cutting the panel. You'll notice that you can see the "hole" at the bottom...

...this is how it looks in the real a/c!

This is how many older a/c that've been "upgraded" actually look. If you look at the lower right part of the panel, you'll see fuses! instead of circuit breakers...

There is a row of circuit breakers for the avionics to the left of the radio stack. There is a 2 amp circuit breaker on the left side which hasn't been modeled/textured yet.

There is a lot of work to be done on the lower electrical/controls panel yet. It's hard to work from even hi-resolution photos, what with all the wires, yokes, and assorted gee-gaws blocking the view... :rotfl:

I'm not a "master" but I am a fairly good amateur! :)

Thanks for the kind words. :D

It sure does look good! is it worth it and very different using Max9 instead of Gmax? That's apart from the rendering capabilities.. ?

That's a difficult question to answer, since by and large I am still using mostly the same modeling techniques that I've used in GMax...

...as I simply do not have the time to spend learning "new stuff" of which Max9 is capable.

However, I will say that I do very much like the automatic UVW Mapping feature. After creating a new object, I simply add a UVW Unwrap modifier, open the Editor, and find that most of the time every polygon has been nicely UVW Mapped correctly...

...in other words, the shaft of a knob was UVW Mapped with a cylindrical map, the face of the knob with a planar map, the side of the the knob with a cylindrical map, etc.

Then in the UVW Editor, a single button click on "Pack UVWs" will automatically separate the maps and arrange them for me, allowing me to select/move/scale 'em as I wish.

The one feature I would really like to have from Max is the ability to bake textures. Are there any developments on an affordable way to do this? (I remember there was a discussion about doing it in Blender....)
