• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Adding a runway to ATC list

Hello, I have read many posts and learned about many helpful things here, thank you! I am still stumped by one thing with the airport I'm working with (KROC). The GA runway is 7/25, but I cannot seem to convince FSX to list it as an option in the ATC window. Do I need to add AI traffic to utilize this runway? How does ATC know which runways are available for listing?

Again, thanks for all the help.

Rochester again !!!!

Seems like I worked six or seven guys through this in FS2004 / AFCAD...

First - do you want all three runways open at the same time or only 7/25 and 4/22. If you choose just the two, wind conditions may result in 10/28 being the only active runway.

If you want all three - realize a couple things if the X-Rwy technique is used.

1. You only get two runway combinations Rwys 4-7-10 open and Rwys 22-25-28 open. This will cause crosswind landings on some runways. You cannot get 4-25-28 or any other combination.

2. The ATIS will be pretty useless as far as runway - because all the runways will be listed as open for takeoff and landing all the time. You can get the weather - but forget the rest.

3. Jets are going to use 4/22 for takeoff - becasue it's the only runway over 7,000 ft. Turboprobs might use 10/28 or only 4/22 for takeoff. I don't remember Mike's exact figures on runway lengths for turboprops - but I think the 4,394ft for 7/25 is too short.

The process is to create a series of very short runways - 10x10 ft or 3x3M - set 7.9 degrees apart to 'bridge' the gap between the real runways.

This tricks FS into thinking the runways are parallel - because any two runways less than 8 degrees apart are parallel.

We've learned some new things since the last tutorial was writting for FS2004/ AFCAD - including that we can place the fake runways above the Arctic circle.

I don't know if FSXP has that capability yet.

Let me do some checking.

EDIT - Okay - I could create the runways in FSXP - but could not adjust their order in the list nor their position.

I cleaned that up in XML.

Attached the XML file - it does not have the approaches, taxisigns or scenery objects - since none of those need to be changed.

I've also included a compiled .BGL file. Be aware that when you compile the .BGL file you will get errors about the fake runways being more than 5,000 ft away from the airport - because I placed then at 83 North

EDIT #2 - I saw a BE58 taxi out from the GA area to Rwy 10 for takeoff - that indicates to me the runway distances for takeoff of single engine piston and multi-engine piston are different.

That is a BIG change from FS2004 and we will have to do some investigation.

You might want to increase Rwy 7/25 to 5,001 ft in length to see if that changes the usage.

Thank you for the quick reply and all the details/files! Things are coming together for me now, and I think I'm getting the hang of it. I had read about the 7.9deg separation before, but I hadn't realized that this was the key. Neat trick to put the 'bridge' rwys so far north.

For me, it's ok if the turbo props don't use 7/25, since I mostly want to fly small GA aircraft in/out of this runway. It's mostly used by small GA anyhow in real life.

I'll mess around with the length, though, just to see what happens with activity on that runway. I have a lot more to learn, but this has been a huge help.

Sorry, didn't realize kroc has been a frequent request; never would have guessed that :)
