• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Adding texture to group in Gmax

Hi,

I'm steadily adding textures to a model that I've been working on and off for a while now. (See http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/suggestions-help-wanted-on-my-model.434645/)

I've no real issues with the texturing, but I've run into a little problem when trying to texture the landing gear. Each gear is modeled a group that consists of strut, axle, tyre, wheel. The tyre & wheel have the still & blurred animations. The whole group has the gear animation for lowering & raising the gear. The tyre is textured. So far so good.

What I want to do next is texture the wheel and the other parts of the group. Option 1 is to ungroup everything, uvw map & unwrap each part, then put them back again re-adding the animations. Is there a simpler option 2.

BTW, I'm using GMAX

Thanks

Zihamesh.

Zihamesh, groups are not really recommended since you can run into horrible scaling problems – especially if you modify and then Ungroup. However, rather than undoing all your work, use Group/Open, map each part and then Group/Close. Then get into the habit of using a well-organised hierarchy and Named Selection Sets: see Bill Leaming's excellent thread on this.

This sounds normal. I have been using groups for years with no scaling issues. I am aware of Bill's thread which i even posted that with such large projects there is a reason they designed the group option. I never run into scaling issues because i make sure all parts have been xformed before grouping.

I also group my gear section. Just re open the group and texture the unfinished parts. If you have to re texture a part you have 2 choices. 1. UVW map makes you start over. 2. Unwrap UVW allows you to continue working on the existing mapping. Once finished just re group. There should be no effect on your animation. This will remain the same.
