• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 ADE9 does not work with MSXML 4.0 SP3

My ADE9 did no longer work with an MSXML 4.0 problem.

Probably a Windows 11 23H2 update on my dektop has installed MSXML 4.0 SP3.
On my notebook I found SP2. after replacing the dlls ADE9 compiled again.

Guenther

Gary, all those links refer to SP3, which is the one causing problems for the OP?

I am confused with Gary's links.

Is there anybody who has ADE9 compiling with MSXML 4.0 SP3?

IIUC, what is causing the problem is Windows-11.

AFAIK, installing MSXML SP2 rather than SP3 with the security patch and "SDK Parser" update ...would be 'asking for trouble':

MS is aggressively seeking to eradicate use of Windows-10 like they did with Windows-XP when they foisted Windows Vista on the computer world (Vista was ultimately declared an 8 Billion dollar 'mistake' by some).

And MS did the same with Windows-7 when they launched Windows-10.

Thus, we see IMHO, un-necessary deprecation of Windows-10 in general, termination and/or hiding of download links for numerous essential system components such as MSXML 4.0 SP3 which can still be used in "Compatibility" mode (with- or without- applied security patches released last year, or only or a few years ago) while installed on Windows-11.

The links are supplied for download of MSXML 4.0 SP3 because ADE AFAIK, has version-specific dependencies on that code component of XML in Windows due to its associated dependency of the BGLComp SDK compiler in FS2004 through FSX SP2 (and IIRC, some versions of P3D).

IIUC, MSXML 6.0 SP3 can not be substituted for MSXML 4.O SP3 with legacy versions of the FS SDK.

You may note that I am not thus far, suggesting end users who still base their activities in "legacy" versions of FS9 etc. are 'asking for trouble' by using those older version, nor that their potential for problems may be substantially increased if they begin using Windows-11.

But, honestly, based on what I see taking place with MS via their 'Draconian' BS with the Windows-11 / UEFI / TPM Module agenda being further subserved by their escalation of interference with legacy core components by their Security and anti-viral software, I am increasingly compelled to point out that FS users may wish to download and install Windows-10 (from .ISO's that are still available even today on MS' own servers), and disable MS security software, substituting instead, Malwarebytes payware edition with Rootkit Protection, and Malwarebytes AdwCleaner as needed.

I hope this helps explain my having posted the info I did early this morning before my daily coffee.

If I have missed something here, please do let me know.

On second thought, I am just going to say it now ...IMHO, Windows-11 and MS Security software (even if running in Windows-10), ultimately is more likely going to cause trouble eventually for all versions of FS older than MSFS 2020.

I am very impressed and grateful for your knowledge and opinion.
However, going back to Windows 10 is unfortunately not an option for me.

Is it really a significant risk if I copy two DLLs from MSXML 4.0 SP2 to SP3?

Best regards
Guenther

I do not now- and in the future am unlikely to- use Windows-11, until I have studied it extensively (assuming adequate time / interest).

Thus, I would hesitate to speculate on what one's results may be using a mix of DLL versions, lest I lead someone into "DLL Hell".

If I did opt to use Windows-11, I would first do a "lobotomy" on all but its core features required for FS or other highly specialized software.

I might use a recent release of this package as a minimum:

MSXML 4.0 SP3 was deprecated by MS for both Windows 10 and Windows-11 ...due to security concerns.

However, as cited above, MS issued a security patch for MSXML 4.0 SP3 as recently as year 2024, which may merit installation ASAP.

BGLComp.exe for FSX and P3Dv1.4x SDK requires a legacy version of MSXML 4.0 SP3- but reportedly will not work with MSXML 6.0.

If BGLComp works with MSXML 4.0 SP2, and there are no known issues in FS version(s) you run with BGLs compiled via SP2 DLLs, test it.

Windows always has security risks; so always use reasonable security measures and test for issues to see if your work-around ...works OK.

I would first try using MSXML 4.0 SP3 with a security patch running in Compatibility mode by configuring the SDK BGLComp.exe shortcut.

https://legacyupdate.net/download-c...microsoft-xml-core-services-4.0-sp3-kb2758694

That may require manually entering the path to BGLComp in ADE setup so that it launches a shortcut instead of running the *.exe directly.

When I get my FS computers rebuilt this week, I may be able to ID the steps needed to "fool" ADE into linking to a BGLComp.exe 'shortcut'.

Hi Guenther:

FYI: during my recent FS computer rebuilds under Windows 10 Pro, I was able to install / run ADE v1.79 with MSXML 4.0 SP3.

I did not need the MSXML 4.0 SP3 security patch, nor was it necessary for ADE to be running in Compatibility mode.

I installed this version of ADEv1.79 for FS2Kx from the ZIP last released by scruffyduck (aka Jon Masterson):

https://www.fsdeveloper.com/downloads/ade_current_dev.zip

In preparation for the ADE install, I pre-installed P3Dv1.4x SDK, DirectX End-User Runtime DX-9.0c June 10, 2010, a few VisualC++ Runtime components, and .NET 8.x.

IMHO, it is not necessary to operate Windows-11 in order to use a UEFI SecureBoot under GPT file system to run FS2Kx, P3D, or MSFS.

I did have problems getting FS9 / FSX running from fresh installs, but was able resurrect existing legitimate installs, and activate them.

BTW: I used RegEdit, Group Policy Editor, PowerShell scripts, and App Settings to "lobotomize" and/or un-install much of Windows Defender and deactivate Real Time Protection anti-viral scanning, in addition to using well SysInternals AutoRuns to disable OneDrive / CoPilot crap, MS Edge 'bloat', and other system performance "leeches".

Additionally I used SysInternals Process Explorer and Windows sServuces.msc to suspend and disable Windows SearchApp and SearchIndexer services. This latter tweak restored system-wide Windows Explorer / File Manager file and folder read / write / copy speed ...which had been very problematic since early 2025.

I hope this info helps in future consideration of rebuilding an FS computer when things go wrong, or new hardware is purchased. 🎅
